Comets play key role in bringing water to Earth billions of years ago study

(Xinhua)09:30, May 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Xinhua) — Scientists proposed a new theory about the origin of oceans on Earth. They suggested that comets played a key role in delivering the life-enabling water to our planet billions of years ago.

The study published in the latest journal Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters showed that water in many comets may share a common origin with Earths oceans.

The worlds largest airborne observatory SOFIA operated by the U.S. space agency NASA found that Comet Wirtanen, as it made its closest approach to Earth in December of 2018, contains ocean-like water.

SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, is a Boeing 747 jetliner modified to carry a 2.7-meter diameter telescope, according to NASA.

Observing at high altitudes above much of the Earths atmospheric water allowed the telescope to accurately measure the ratio of regular to heavy water in Comet Wirtanen. The regular water is H2O, while the heavy water is called HDO, which has an extra neutrally-charged particle called a neutron inside one of the hydrogen atoms.

The data showed that Comet Wirtanens water ratio is the same as the Earths oceans, according to the study.

Comparing the new data with previous studies of comets, the scientists found the ratio of regular to heavy water was not linked to the origin of the comets, for example, whether they were from the Kuiper Belt or the outer fringe of the solar system.

Instead, the ratio was related to how much water was released from ice grains in the comets coma compared to directly from the snowy surface, implying that all comets could have a heavy-to-regular water ratio similar to Earths oceans.

If comets have the same ratio of these water types as Earths oceans, it indicates that the water in both may share a common origin, according to the researchers.

A remote-controlled car powered by 5G has wowed spectators as it successfully made a left turn, avoided barriers and backed into a parking lot, all controlled by a person 1,000 kilometers away.

The signal transmission delay stayed within one millisecond, said an employee with Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co. Ltd, who presented the technology at the recently concluded Third World Intelligence Congress in Tianjin, northeastern China.

Another highlight at the conference was Muse, a concept autonomous vehicle manufactured by ICONIQ Motors, an emerging Chinese car brand. The car does not have a steering wheel. All the driver needs to do is to input the destination, and the car will drive there with the guidance of a highly accurate navigation system.

鈥淭he traditional automobile industry is in transition. Self-driving cars and intelligent connected vehicles are building a bright future for the industry,鈥?said Carsten Breitfeld, CEO of ICONIQ.

China has marched into a new chapter of self-driving technology, said Du Zhibin, director of China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co., Ltd. Automotive Data Center.

Self-driving technology is speeding up the transformation from theory to practice. John Hopcroft, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, believes that driving jobs may disappear completely with the development of autonomous driving technology.

Self-driving technology won鈥檛 stop with passenger vehicles. For example, a self-driving tractor recently completed road tests in Changsha, Hunan province. Equipped with an intelligent system, the tractor can work automatically, plowing fields without the need for human intervention.

Local govts racing to roll out 5G network construction

(Chinadaily.com.cn)15:31, May 27, 2019

With the approach of full commercial use of 5G, local governments in China have intensively introduced their plans on 5G development recently, as regions like the Pearl River Delta region, Yangtze River Delta region and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region are gearing up to cultivate industrial clusters valued at trillions of yuan, according to a report by Economic Information Daily.

At present, more than 20 provincial-level regions have completed 5G call tests and more than 500,000 commercial 5G base stations are expected to be built in South Chinas Guangdong, North Chinas Hebei, East Chinas Zhejiang and Jiangxi, and Central Chinas Hubei provinces and the cities of Shanghai, Harbin, Tianjin, Chongqing and Wuhan in the future, the report said.

With technologies and products related to the 5G network maturing, the main parts of the 5G industrial chain, including systems, chips and terminals, are ready for commercial use, Wen Ku, a spokesman for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said on Tuesday.

The report said the ministry, having made a general plan for 5G application, is estimated to formally issue 5G licenses at some point this year.

As one of Chinas first batch of 5G pilot cities, Guangzhou will build 10,000 5G base stations by the end of year, aiming to take a lead to achieve the commercial use of 5G this year.

Shanghai plans to build 10,000 and 30,000 5G base stations by this year and by 2021 respectively, to realize deep coverage of 5G networks in the whole city and build itself into a leading pilot area of 5G network construction.

According to a 5G development plan released by Guangdong province on May 15, the Pearl River Delta region will be built into a 5G broadband city cluster that has world-level 5G industrial agglomeration area and 5G fusion application area.

In addition, the province proposed a 5G industrial agglomeration area valued at trillions of yuan that will be developed in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Earlier, Jiangsu province also released a notice, proposing the three provinces and one city in the Yangtze River Delta region, which referred to Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces and Shanghai, should jointly promote the region to become a national 5G construction and application demonstration area.

As early as 2016, authorities in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province signed a cooperation agreement on the coordinated development of informatization, mapping out plans on 5G network construction.

The coordinated layout of 5G development of major regions can benefit the construction of a connected regional network infrastructure, which will help them explore the services and derivative values of 5G application in a larger scope and to a greater extent, play leading roles for other regions in the country, Feng Xiaohui, a consultant at Chinese research firm CCID Consulting Co, said.

Telecom operators also are intensively issuing 5G deployment plans to accelerate 5G test and network construction.

The report said China Mobile has carried out 5G scale tests and application demonstrations in 17 cities, China Unicom is achieving consistent coverage of a 5G trial network in seven cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Hangzhou, as well as Xiongan. It plans to achieve 5G network coverage in 33 cities selected areas, and China Telecom plans to accelerate 5G network deployment in some key cities, and build 20,000 base stations in 2019.

More than 2 million 5G base stations are expected to be invested and built nationwide by 2022, Zhang Yingqiang, a researcher with the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, said, according to the report.

In addition, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology predicted the total investment on 5G networks will reach 90 billion yuan to 1.5 trillion yuan between 2020 and 2025, with telecom enterprises operation revenue related to 5G reaching 1.9 trillion yuan, the report said.

However, Feng warned that as 5G technologies and standards are not yet fully mature at present, for local governments, how to avoid excessive risks in choosing a roadmap and making early investment while promoting 5G development has become a focus issue.

Wu Leis first goal in La Liga on Saturday night touched off wild celebrations among Chinese fans锛峴ome of whom even wept with joy.

Wu, who led the Chinese Super League in scoring last season before joining Espanyol last month, tallied in the 65th minute in his new clubs 3-1 win over Valladolid.

It had been 3,731 days since midfielder Shao Jiayi was the last Chinese male player to score in a top European league when he netted for Cottbus in the Bundesliga on Dec 13, 2008.

Wus feat ignited Chinas social media as news of his goal became the third most trendy topic on Weibo only an hour after the match ended.

Through Sunday afternoon, related topics had been viewed almost 60 million times.

Countless domestic fans used the same phrase-Wu is the hope of us all!锛峵o comment beneath nearly every related online news item.

Im so excited! Several months ago I was scoring in the Chinese Super League, but now Ive scored in La Liga. Its just dreamy for me, said the 27-year-old, whose 27 goals helped Shanghai SIPG win the CSL title last season.

I really want to thank my teammates for their support since the first day I arrived. I was able to score only because my teammate made a great pass to create the opportunity.

During the halftime break, the coach told me to remain calm in the second half. He believed there would be an opportunity for me to score. So when I had the chance, I kept calm. It was easier to score as long as I wasnt too excited.

After the match everyone on the team congratulated me. As I said before, I felt this team is more like a family since the first day I got here, and I believe we can only get better.

I will always remember this moment. Im so proud to be the first Chinese player to score in La Liga.

Wus performance also earned kudos from Espanyol coach Rubi, who said the player has already become a vital part of the team.

The coach said Wu has fit into the squad very quickly, describing him as a floating feather with great flexibility and speed.

Wus historic goal also attracted international media attention.

The Independent newspaper in Britain commented that Wu Leis presentation as an Espanyol player had an online reach of some 350 million, unlocking the potential for a superstar if their figures are correct and he can keep scoring goals.

According to Tencent Sports, Chinese-owned Espanyol paid Shanghai SIPG around two million euros ($2.28 million) for Wu, who will reportedly earn about one million euros per year锛峢alf of his salary in China.

In return, the CSLs player of the year last season has brought the club unprecedented fan growth. Sales of Wus replica Espanyol jersey have exceeded 10,000 in China, according to the La Liga clubs official shirt maker, Kelme.

A homegrown superstar is exactly what Chinese soccer needs now.

Chinas deputy sports minister Du Zhaocai highlighted the urgency of finding a domestic star at a Chinese Football Association conference in Wuhan, Hubei province, last winter.

If theres no superstar, Chinese soccer will never step out of Asia, said Du.

To find and nurture a major star of our own is equally important as the overall development of Chinese soccer.

On the day he signed with Espanyol, Wu vowed to prove a Chinese player could shine in a top European league. After Saturdays spectacular effort, hes well on the way.
