Chinese AI promotes accurate, quick diagnosis of cervical cancer

GUANGZHOU, July 18 — Using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, Chinese researchers have developed a rapid and accurate screening model to diagnose cervical cancer, a common and fatal disease in women.

Cervical cancer, caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), is the fourth most frequent cancer in women worldwide, with an estimated 570,000 new cases reported and 311,000 deaths from the disease in 2018, according to the World Health Organization.

In China, the incidence and death rates of cervical cancer are also high, with 130,000 new cases reported last year. Most cases are caused by delayed checks.

The current method to detect abnormal cervical cells is cytology-based screening, known as the Pap test. It is often done during a pelvic examination which allows the health care professional to have a clear view of the cervix and upper vagina by a speculum and take a sample of cervical cells.

Based on more than 200,000 pathological images selected from over 43.5 million cervical screening samples, experts from KingMed Diagnostics, a Guangzhou-based medical diagnostic testing company, along with computer engineers from Huawei Cloud, a subsidiary of the Chinese tech giant Huawei, over one year developed an AI-assisted screening model, which can diagnose the disease with an accuracy of over 99 percent, while costing only one-tenth of the examination time performed by pathologists.

Pathologists spend an average of six minutes in examining a cervical screening sample under a microscope, while the AI model just needs 36 seconds per case, said Luo Pifu, director of the companys pathological department and lead researcher of the program.

Cervical cancer can often be detected early, and sometimes even prevented entirely, by having regular screenings. More than 350 million Chinese women aged 30 to 65 need cervical cancer check-ups every three to five years, but the country still lacks the screening capacity to meet the demand.

Data from the National Health Commission shows that China offered free cervical cancer checks to 85 million rural women from 2009 to 2018, to promote screening in impoverished areas.

In addition, a report last year by state television broadcaster CCTV shows that China currently has about 10,000 licensed pathologists but still requires at least a further 90,000.

The talent shortage has limited the promotion of cervical cancer screening, according to Li Yinghua, chief information officer of KingMed Diagnostics.

The company expects the AI-assisted screening to help offset the shortage of well-trained pathologists, as well as expand the scope of early examination of cervical cancer in China.

In 2018, KingMed and Huawei agreed to cooperate in building an AI model for cervical cancer screening.

Compared with AI models using CT or MRI images, the AI-assisted screening model for pathology is more complicated, as pathological images are richer in color, larger in size, and require higher precision so that doctors can see the abnormality of cells, said Luo.

Many cancer patients have to take pathological examinations to know whether their tumors are malignant or benign. Pathological images are an important basis for doctors to make treatment plans.

To train, validate and test the AI, developers fed it with 32,000 samples collected by the company from six provinces in the past 12 years.

The AI was built on the basis of ModelArts, an AI development platform developed by Huawei Cloud which turned the diagnostic experiences accumulated by experts into algorithms and models.

With technologies such as data annotation, model training, image classification and case-based reasoning, the AI can automatically complete the diagnosis procedure, while the pathologists only need to review and confirm the positive cases, said Tu Dandan, a senior technical director of the Huawei Cloud.

Results showed that the model can diagnose the disease with a true positive rate of over 99.9 percent, and a negative predictive value of more than 99 percent, according to the diagnostics company.

The two companies will continue cooperation to explore more possible applications of the AI technologies in the field of pathology, such as breast, digestive system, kidney and blood diseases.

We believe the AI-assisted screening model can save a great deal of manual labor and expand screening coverage, which will benefit more people, said Luo.

(Peoples Daily Online)15:35, July 19, 2019

A dozen retired professors from China’s Shaanxi Normal University (SNNU) recently reunited at the campus to handwrite admission letters for the 4,500 freshmen enrolling this year.

The university has long attached importance to calligraphy, and this marks the 13th year that the SNNU has sent handwritten admission letters.

“Chinese characters are the most important carriers of Chinese civilization, and calligraphy is a treasure of traditional Chinese culture,” said Dang Huaixing, vice president of SNNU.

In handwriting the admission letters, the university hopes that its student will carry on the fine tradition and value handwriting.

More SNNU teachers, students and schoolfellows have joined the retired professors to help write all the admission letters.

Wu Yaohui, the oldest in the team who turned 86 this year, said it was exciting to participate in the activity. He believes that the admission letters carry the hope and care of the university, and represent the inheritance of culture. “I will keep doing this as long as I can,” he said.

The CJ-6, originally a Chinese military trainer aircraft designed and built by Hongdu Aircraft Industry Group, has won approval to be transformed for use in the civilian aviation industry.

A ceremony to issue the necessary Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) credentials to the CJ-6 was held at Yaohu Airport in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, on Feb 28.

The administration issued the airworthiness approval to the CJ-6 after considering its long service period, good operation record, and the large market demand, according to Li Jian, the deputy director of the CAAC. It’s also an innovation in the airworthiness approval field, providing references for future airworthiness approval of military aircraft.

“The airworthiness of the CJ-6 is of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of the aviation industry,” said Wu Xiaojun, deputy governor of the province. He believes that AVIC Hongdu, the manufacturer of the CJ-6, is leading the aviation industry in Jiangxi. He hopes that Hongdu Group will take this opportunity to accelerate production and put the aircraft into the civil market as soon as possible.

The aircraft took to the air in 1958 and entered into service in 1962. Since then, it has racked up about 10 million flight hours, during which time, no fatal accident caused by design or manufacturing problems has been reported. Because of its moderate speed, good stability, and flexible operation, the CJ-6 has been exported to more than 10 countries around the world.

Commander Wei Xiaohui, intern captain of the guided-missile destroyer Zhengzhou (Hull 151) of the Chinese Navy

BEIJING, Mar. 8 (ChinaMil) — In a recent combat drill on the East China Sea, a female officer with military rank of commander adeptly gave battle orders at the operations commanding room aboard the guided-missile destroyer Changchun (Hull 150) of the Chinese Navy.

Who is the female officer? She is Dr. Wei Xiaohui, the first female intern captain of the guided-missile destroyer Zhengzhou (Hull 151) of the Chinese Navy.

After graduating with a doctoral degree, Wei aspired to join the military and she sent a cover letter to the Chinese Navy, in which she expressed her longing for serving in the military and elaborated her conditions and advantages that would enable her to become a qualified soldier. She also attached awards and certificates she had won and papers she had published, which added up to more than 200 pages in total.

In January 2012, her dream came true as she was enlisted in the Chinese Navy. In the following seven years, she evolved from a new recruit to a deputy department head of China鈥檚 first aircraft carrier and then to executive officer and intern captain of destroyers. In the process she achieved an unprecedented growth, faster than standard routines.

In April 2015, Wei was appointed intern executive officer of the guided-missile destroyer Changchun (Hull 150). The first year at the position was full of challenges for her. To learn more about equipment data, she carried a notebook in her pocket so that she could take notes anytime. She took notes on almost everything, ranging from every simple countersign to her own understanding of every operational maneuver, from the name of every piece of equipment to its specific usage methods.

Thanks to her tireless efforts, Wei passed the strict examination and officially became the Chinese Navy鈥檚 first female executive officer in March 2016. Then she was appointed the intern captain of the guided-missile destroyer Zhengzhou (Hull 151) in September 2017.

Today, the legendary female officer is just a heartbeat away from the first female warship captain of the Chinese Navy.
