BEIJING, Aug. 5 — Chinese animated film Ne Zha has grossed nearly 2.4 billion yuan (about 339 million U.S. dollars) on the Chinese mainland since its July 26 premiere, data from the China Movie Data Information Network showed on Monday.

It raked in more than 675 million yuan on Aug. 3-4, contributing nearly 65 percent to the total box office revenue of the outgoing weekend, said the network.

The full-length animated feature has established itself as the most popular animated film ever released on the Chinese mainland, according to the all-time China box office rankings compiled by the network.

Telling the story of Nezha, a beloved Chinese mythical figure, the film features a daring overhaul of Nezhas appearance and depicts him more as a mischievous boy instead of the heroic youngster of previous cinematic works.

The film has topped the Chinese mainland box office for 10 straight days. As of the release of this story, Ne Zha ranked third on the Chinese mainland box office list for 2019.

S.Korea, U.S. begin joint annual military exercises

SEOUL, Aug. 5 — The combined forces of South Korea and the United States actually began their joint annual military exercises on Monday amid the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK)s harsh criticism against it, according to local media reports.

The two allies actually launched the computer-simulated command post exercise (CPX), scheduled to last for about half a month, local broadcaster YTN reported.

During the next 10 days following the CPX, the combined forces would intensively verify the South Korean militarys initial operational capability (IOC) for the transfer of wartime operational control of the South Korean troops from Washington to Seoul.

South Koreas wartime operational command was handed over to the U.S.-led UN Command after the three-year Korean War broke out in 1950. Seoul regained its peacetime command in 1994.

The South Korea-U.S. military drills came amid the DPRKs denunciation. After test-firing two short-range projectiles on July 25, Pyongyang sent warnings against the planned South Korea-U.S. drills and Seouls adoption of the U.S.-made stealth fighter jets.

Since then, the DPRK fired off four more short-range projectiles in just over a week.

An unnamed South Korean military official was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying the drills, which began on Monday, would not be officially called the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises, noting that the announcement on the joint military drills would be made later this week.

South Korea and the United States scrapped or scaled down their joint annual war games, codenamed Key Resolve, Foal Eagle and Ulchi Freedom Guardian, since the first summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un last year and the first-ever DPRK-U.S. summit in June of the year.

In March this year, the combined forces staged the new Dong Maeng exercise to replace the Key Resolve command post exercises and the Foal Eagle field training drills.
