U.S. House of Representatives condemns Trump for racist comments

(Xinhua)13:22, July 17, 2019

WASHINGTON, July 16 — The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill to condemn U.S. President Donald Trump for his racist remarks against four Democratic congresswomen.

The vote, 240 for and 187 against, fell largely along party lines, with four Republican lawmakers voting alongside the Democrats. Justin Amash, an independent lawmaker that recently left the Republican Party, also voted yes.

The bill, titled Condemning President Trumps racist comments directed at members of Congress, was a reaction to a string of Trumps tweets that had told four congresswomen of color to go back to the places from which they came.

The targeted congresswomen were Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts. While Omar was born in Somalia and later moved to Minnesota, the other three were born in the United States.

Why dont they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came, Trump tweeted on Sunday.

If you are not happy here, you can leave, Trump said at a news conference outside the White House on Monday.

This is what racism looks like. We are what democracy looks like, Pressley said. And were not going anywhere.

Tensions ran high before the House proceeded with the vote Tuesday, as lawmakers from both parties were locked in heated debate.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday that I dont have a racist bone in my body!

According to the Pew Research Center, there are currently 52 voting members in the House and 16 members in the Senate who are immigrants or children of immigrants.

British PM candidates hold final leadership debate with focus on Brexit

(Xinhua)13:18, July 18, 2019

LONDON, July 17 — British Prime Minister hopefuls Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt stated their approaches to handling Brexit when they made their final bids for the leadership of the governing Conservative Party on Wednesday.

The two contenders, Britains former and current foreign secretaries, finally completed a nation-wide round of 16 election hustings with a crowded rally in the British capital.

Johnson, in his signature flamboyant arm-waving style, ruled out any prospect of an election pact with any of the other political parties, including the newly-formed Brexit Party that has attracted a following from thousands of Conservative members.

He said the Conservative Party should not do deals to keep Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn out of Downing Street.

But Johnson would not be drawn on whether he would suspend the British parliament as a means of achieving Brexit, or whether he would call an early general election.

Referring to the hundreds of thousands of people who have voted for rival parties in recent elections, Johnson told the audience that we are stirring down the barrel.

He repeated the message he has given at the previous 15 hustings that Britain will leave the European Parliament on Oct. 31, with or without a deal.

Questioned about messages from Brussels that the Brexit deal brokered by the current Prime Minister Theresa May is not up for negotiation, Johnson said that wheres the will theres a way.

We need to get our mojo back as a party, he added.

If there is a refusal (by Brussels) to compromise, if they wont change a dot or a comma of the withdrawal agreement, then obviously we have no choice to come out on different terms and thats what well do, he told the cheering crowds.

He also said that when Britain leaves the EU, the country will be able, for the first time in 45 years, to champion trade deals around the world.

In his final presentation, Hunt said it would not be right to suspend parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit. But he said if he becomes prime minister he would deliver a budget in September, which would include preparations for a no-deal Brexit.

Hunt outlined his four priorities after Brexit has been resolved.

He said he will fire up the economy to be the most pro-business in Europe, turning Britain into the next silicone valley. Hunt also said he would increase Britains defense budget, and end illiteracy in schools.

He said he wants to attract more young people into the Conservative Party, so they can take part in the next general election.

Hunt told the audience that if Johnson wins, it would be a huge honor to serve as one of his front-line ministers.

According to opinion polls, Johnson is on target to succeed May as Britains next prime minister.

British PM frontrunner Johnson vows to deliver Brexit by Oct. 31

(Xinhua)13:41, July 18, 2019

LONDON, July 18 — British Prime Minister hopeful Boris Johnson has insisted that he would take Britain out of the European Union (EU) on the scheduled date of Oct. 31, with or without a deal.

He voiced this stance in his final Conservative Party leadership debate with Jeremy Hunt on Wednesday.

Questioned about messages from Brussels that the Brexit deal brokered by outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May is not up for negotiation, Johnson said: Wheres the will, theres a way.

We need to get our mojo back as a party, he added.

If there is a refusal (by Brussels) to compromise, if they wont change a dot or a comma of the withdrawal agreement, then obviously we have no choice to come out on different terms and thats what well do, he told the cheering crowds.

He also said that Brexit will enable his country to champion trade deals around the world for the first time in 45 years.

But the favorite to be named as Mays successor would not be drawn on whether he would suspend the British parliament as a means of achieving Brexit, or whether he would call an early general election.

UK politicians slam Trumps racist remarks

(Xinhua)09:03, July 16, 2019

LONDON, July 15 — British outgoing prime minister and prime minister candidates on Monday condemned remarks made by the U.S. President Donald Trump about a group of mostly American-born Democratic congresswomen, calling them unacceptable.

The spokesperson of the outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday that Trumps remarks on several minority Democratic lawmakers telling them to go back to the places from which they came are completely unacceptable.

But the spokesperson declined to give further remarks on the issue.

Asked during a leadership debate on Monday night whether they agreed with the prime minister that the comments were unacceptable, both forerunner Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, two candidates for the job of prime minister, said they did.

Johnson, who called the remarks totally unacceptable, said: Relations between the UK and the U.S. are incredibly important but if you are the leader of great multi-racial, multi-cultural society you simply cannot use that kind of language about sending people back to where they came from.

Hunt said it is not going to help the situation to use that kind of language about the president of the United States.

The development came one day after Trump ignited a Twitter war with several minority Democratic lawmakers.

Why dont they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came, Trump said in a series of tweets targeting at four Democratic lawmakers who were ethnic minorities.

Three of the four were born in the United States and one moved to the United States as a child refugee.

The group of four lawmakers, sometimes known as the squad among peers, was often attacked by Trump for their progressive positions.

U.S., Russia to discuss arms control in Geneva report

(Xinhua)10:16, July 16, 2019

WASHINGTON, July 15 — The United States will send a high-level delegation to discuss arms control issues with the Russian side in Geneva later this week, U.S. media reported on Monday.

According to the New York Times, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan will head U.S. delegation, which also includes staff from the National Security Council, Pentagon, and other agencies. Sergei Ryabkov, the deputy foreign minister, will lead the Russian delegation.

The arms control regime between Washington and Moscow has been under erosion. The White Houses decision to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty will take effect next month. Meanwhile, the United States has expressed disinterest in extending the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which will expire in 2021.

China can effectively sanction US companies who sell weapons to Taiwan experts

Washington applying ‘double standards’ on Beijing’s sanctions

Su-35 fighter jets flew over the Bashi Channel in formation with the H-6Ks for the first time, which marks a new breakthrough in island patrol patterns, said Shen Jinke, spokesperson for the PLA air force. The US is deploying a double standard by calling Chinas proposed sanctions on US companies for arms sales to Taiwan a foolish action, Chinese mainland analysts said on Sunday, pointing out that the sanctions could not only cut base material supply to these companies including rare earths but also block their non-military products from entering Chinese markets.

After the US government approved a plan to sell $2.22 billion worth of arms to Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang announced at a routine press briefing on Friday that to safeguard national interests, China would impose sanctions on US enterprises participating in the sales.

Citing data released by the US Department of Defense, Chinese state-owned media identified these firms as Raytheon that provides Stinger missiles, General Dynamics that provides M1A2T tanks, and BAE and Oshkosh that provide tanks equipment.

US Senator Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told media that it was a foolish action as the companies that would possibly be sanctioned were not very much going to be engaged in defense industry sales to China, according to a short video VOA Chinese posted on its Twitter account on Sunday.

In response, Xu Guangyu, a senior consultant at the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association, told the Global Times on Sunday that these US arms companies seem to not have an arms trade connection with China, but this is just in terms of final product.

A final product is based on many components built by a whole industrial chain in which China plays important roles, Xu said, noting that China could freeze the industrial chains related to these companies, or stop providing certain base materials.

Rare earths, the industry which is largely controlled by China, are imperative in making advanced weapons and equipment. For instance, the M1A2 tank of General Dynamics uses samarium-cobalt in its navigation system, according to a UK-based Daily Telegraph report in 2011.

The US Department of Defense is assessing the US rare earths capability to secure a stable supply amid the countrys trade conflict with China, Reuters reported on Saturday.

Industry insiders warned that these companies non-military businesses could also be affected. General Dynamics is not only the manufacturer of the M1A2 tank, but also the parent company of Gulfstream, an aircraft company whose private jets are reportedly favored by Chinese billionaires.

Gulfstream is the earliest foreign business jet-maker that entered the Chinese market decades ago and certain types of its jets such as the Gulfstream G650 are now popular among Chinas wealthiest, a senior executive of a Beijing-based business aviation integrated service provider told the Global Times. He asked not to be fully named.

A business jet is priced between $20 million and $70 million, he said, which means that losing the Chinese market could strike a huge blow to the US company.

Industry insiders said that one of the punitive measures could be ordering Chinese banks and financial institutions to reject loans to transactions related to Gulfstream, as almost all business jets are sold via a mortgage financing model.

Gulfstreams Chinese clients include the founder of Alibaba Jack Ma Yun and Wanda Chairman Wang Jianlin, media reported.

The website of General Dynamics China branch became inaccessible on Sunday.

US arms sales to Taiwan constitute a serious violation of international law and the basic norms governing international relations. This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the three China-US Joint Communiqués, Geng said on Friday.

He also expressed Chinas opposition to Taiwan regional leader Tsai Ing-wens transit in the US, urging the US side to cancel arms sales immediately and stop the official exchange with Taiwan.

Chinese mainland analysts stressed that the decision to launch sanctions underlined Chinas firm opposition to arms sales to Taiwan.

Firm opposition

The simplest measure to punish these companies was to ban their business in China, Shi Yinhong, director of Renmin University of Chinas Center for American Studies in Beijing, told the Global Times on Sunday.

Lessons could also be drawn from precedent. On December 17, 2015, then foreign ministry spokesperson Hong Lei announced that neither Chinese governments nor Chinese enterprises would cooperate with companies involved in US arms sales to Taiwan. Companies involved at that time were Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

Apart from sanctions, some Taiwan media is also interpreting an exercise by the Peoples Liberation Army near the southeast coast as the Chinese mainlands expression of opposition to arms sales.

The Chinese Ministry of National Defensesaid in a statement Sunday that the exercise was part of their regular arrangement according to the annual schedule.

By criticizing Chinas sanctions on US arms firms as foolish action, the US is obviously applying a double standard as the US has imposed sanctions on China that are even more useless and stupid, the analysts said.

In September 2018, the US imposed sanctions on Chinas Equipment Development Department, the military branch responsible for weapons and equipment, and its director, Li Shangfu, for buying Su-35 fighter jets and S-400 surface-to-air missile system from Russia, claiming this was against a US sanctions law punishing Russian government for meddling in the 2016 US election, Reuters reported.

British diplomat says Trump scraps Iran nuclear deal to annoy Obama report

(Xinhua)08:32, July 15, 2019

LONDON, July 14 — U.S. President Donald Trump scrapped the Iran nuclear deal to spite his predecessor Barack Obama, British media on Sunday quoted a leaked memo as saying.

The memo, written by Britains former ambassador to the United States Kim Darroch, said the move was a diplomatic vandalism, according to the Mail newspaper.

The administration is set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism, seemingly for ideological and personality reasons — it was Obamas deal, Darroch wrote in a diplomatic telegram in May 2018.

The newspaper said the memo was written shortly after then British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson appealed to Washington to stick with the nuclear deal.

In the cable, Darroch indicated there were splits among Trumps advisers and said the White House lacked a day-after strategy.

The first batch of leaked memos criticizing the Trump administration appeared last week, and prompted Darrochs resignation from his role.

France, Germany, UK warn Iran nuke deal will collapse unless talks resume

(Xinhua)09:33, July 15, 2019

PARIS, July 14 — Leaders of France, Germany and Britain, European signatories of Iran 2015 nuclear agreement, on Sunday said they are extremely concerned by the fuelling tension in the Gulf region, which they said likely to put the accord at risk unless the concerned parties join the same table of talks.

Today, we are concerned about the risk that JCPoA (nuclear deal) will collapse following sanctions imposed by the United States and as a result of Irans decision to no longer respect key provisions of the agreement, the three European countries (E3) said.

The risks are such that it is necessary for all stakeholders to pause, and consider the possible consequences of their actions, they added in a statement released by the French President Emmanuel Macrons office.

We believe that the time has come to act responsibly and to look for ways to stop the escalation of tension and resume dialogue, they stressed.

The three powers reiterated support of Iran nuclear accord, but they noted that its continuation depends on Tehrans full compliance with its obligations, urging Irans officials to reverse activities aimed to boost nuclear enrichment beyond agreed parameters.

Our countries have recently taken several diplomatic initiatives to contribute to de-escalation and to resume dialogue … We will continue to explore the opportunities for talks to address the issue of Irans compliance…, the statement said.

They also pledged to pursue active engagement with all interested parties to reach a solution able to preserve international peace and security.
