Iran ready to hold talks with U.S. if sanctions lifted Rouhani

(Xinhua)17:21, July 15, 2019

TEHRAN, July 14 — Iran is ready to hold negotiations with the United States if Washington lifts sanctions against Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday.

We are always ready for negotiation. I tell you this hour and this moment to abandon bullying and lift the sanctions and return to logic and wisdom. We are ready, the Iranian Mehr News Agency quoted Rouhani as saying.

Leaders of France, Germany and Britain, European signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement said on Sunday they are extremely concerned about the escalating tension in the Gulf region, which they said is likely to put the accord at risk unless the concerned parties join the same table of talks.

In May last year, Washington unilaterally abandoned the Iran nuclear deal and restarted to sanction Iran. On May 8, Iran stopped implementing some of its commitments under the deal and set a 60-day deadline for the Europeans to help Iran reap the economic benefits of the deal.

On July 7, as the deadline expired, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran was ready to begin enriching uranium beyond the 3.67-percent level set in the Iran nuclear deal, adding that Tehran would go on gradually abandoning its nuclear commitments every 60 days.

On July 8, Iran announced that it had raised the concentration of its enriched uranium to 4.5 percent from 3.67 purity.

Following Tehrans announcement, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, along with other senior Trump administration officials, vowed to continue to pile up economic pressure on Iran.

U.S. attempts to play off Taiwan against China will be in vain

By ZhongSheng (Peoples Daily)09:33, July 12, 2019

Facing the U.S. State Department’s approval of the sales of a package of weapons worth $2.22 billion to Taiwan on July 8, China expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition.

The move of the U.S. has seriously violated the international law, the basic norms of international relations, the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués.

In addition, it is a flagrant interference in China’s domestic affairs that harms China’s sovereignty and security interests, poisons the development of military relations between China and the U.S., and gravely undermines the cross-strait relations and the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan question concerns China’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and core interests. The Chinese government has constantly reiterated its consistent and clear position on the question that the country has unshakeable will and resolve to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely opposes any form of official or military contact between any country and Taiwan.

U.S. pursuing arms sale to Taiwan is a decades-old problem, and to resolve the problem, China and the U.S. jointly signed the August17 Communique in 1982.

However, over the past 30 some years, the U.S. side has repeatedly reneged on its promises by violating the provisions of the above joint communiqué, and shown a tendency to intensify such practices recently, which fully revealed its attempts to contain China by playing Taiwan card to play off Taiwan against China.

Given the current cross-strait relations, the irresponsible practice of the U.S. has sent a wrong signal to “Taiwan independence” forces, aggravated the tension and complexity of the situation across the Taiwan Strait, and created greater uncertainties for China-U.S. relations.

Sound and stable development of China-U.S. relationship, one of the most important bilateral ties in the world, not only accords with the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also the common expectation of the international community. The U.S. should not take the chances and keep walking on the wrong path.

The U.S. side must understand that selling arms to Taiwan will not be able to fill the huge gap of military strength between Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

Making the fourth plan to purchase weapons from the U.S., the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan is sacrificing the interests of the people in the region and the future of Taiwan for its own profits. It stirred up cross-straits conflict and escalated cross-straits confrontation, playing as a bargaining chip of the U.S. to suppress China.

Some experts in Taiwan described the arms deal as a “fool’s decision”, because the price is high and the weapons purchased are not able to secure Taiwan at all.

Chinese military has resolve, confidence, and capability to frustrate any form of secessionist attempts at “Taiwan independence” and external forces trying to interfere in China’s internal affairs.

No one should ever underestimate the Chinese government and people’s will and resolution to safeguard national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and core interests of the country. The DPP administration must understand that there’s no way out by relying on foreigners to build itself up, and what’s ahead are only failure and self-destruction.

Both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to a community with a shared future, and no one is able to obstruct the prevailing trend of closer and better cross-strait relations.

Since the introduction of the 31 measures for promoting the cross-straits economic and cultural exchanges by Chinese mainland, more and more Taiwanese have come to the mainland working, living, and starting businesses. Today, it has become a widespread consensus among the majority of Taiwanese that “only when the cross-strait relations become better, will they have a better future”.

When the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are seeing more and more integrated social and economic development, the DPP administration, wasting the hard-earned money of the people and acting as a pawn of the U.S., will only be condemned by the people from both sides of the Strait.

It’s better for the U.S. to have a clear understanding of the current situation and seriously abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiqués. It should immediately cancel the planned arms sale to Taiwan, stop selling weapons to Taiwan and terminate military contact with Taiwan, and exercise caution and prudence when handling Taiwan-related issues to avoid serious damage to China-US relations and cross-strait peace and stability.

New poll shows Boris Johnson unstoppable in race for Downing Street

(Xinhua)10:30, July 13, 2019

LONDON, July 11 (Xinhua) — Former British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is now unstoppable in the two-man race to succeed Theresa May as prime minister, the latest poll revealed Thursday.

Even if every one of the 28 percent of Conservative members still to vote put their crosses against rival Jeremy Hunts name, Johnson would still win by a landslide.

That was the verdict of a poll among party members conducted by the website ConservativeHome.

According to a poll of party members by ConservativeHome 71 percent said they had already voted, with 72 percent backing Johnson and 28 percent voting for Jeremy Hunt.

Paul Goodman, editor of ConservativeHome, said: If the survey is accurate, it would be reasonable to assume, on the evidence available at the moment, that Johnson will win somewhere between 67 percent and 72 percent of the vote.

Johnson has won this contest already. Even if the entire 28 percent of those who havent voted yet opt for Hunt, he cannot catch the front-runner.

Commenting on the poll, the Guardian newspaper said: We wont know for sure for another 12 days, but in the past these surveys have been a fairly reliable guide to how people vote in internal Conservative elections.

The boost for Johnson comes just days after YouGov poll of Conservative members which also gave Johnson an enormous lead over Hunt, the current foreign secretary.

Johnson still has critics from within his own Conservative Party, with former prime minister Sir John Major saying in an interview he would support legal action to prevent Johnson shutting down the House of Commons. A rare procedure known as proroguing parliament could be used to stop MPs blocking a no-deal Brexit in the House of Commons.

It would mean Queen Elizabeth II being asked to suspend parliament. Political commentators have described it as the nuclear option to force through a no-deal Brexit if Brussels rejects a deal for Britains withdrawal from the European Union.

In the House of Commons Thursday Labours Valerie Vaz, the shadow leader of the Commons told MPs that her party would support Majors challenge if he took it to court for a judicial review.

Vaz asked the Leader of the Commons, Conservative MP Mel Stride: Will the government explicitly rule out proroguing parliament to force a no-deal Brexit? The opposition stand with Sir John Major, who said that he would seek a judicial review in the courts if the new Prime Minister tried to suspend Parliament to deliver a no-deal Brexit.

Vaz said she agreed with former Attorney General, the Conservative MP Dominic Grieve, who had commented that if parliament was suspended it would be be the end of parliamentary democracy.

Stride responded: The Government do not believe that (suspending parliament) would be a desirable situation, not least because it would put the monarch in the awkward position of being involved in what is essentially a political decision given that it is Prorogation based on the advice of the Prime Minister, but ultimately granted by the Queen.

Irans IRGC denies attempts to seize British oil tanker

(Xinhua)10:30, July 13, 2019

TEHRAN, July 11 (Xinhua) — Irans Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) denied that its naval forces intended to stop a British oil tanker in the countrys southern waters on Thursday, Iranian state TV reported.

The IRGCs Navy vessels carry out their regular patrolling missions in the Gulf with vigilance, precision and strength, the IRGC Navys Fifth Naval Zone said in a statement.

In the past 24 hours, there has been no encounter with foreign ships, including British ones, the statement was quoted as reading by Press TV.

Earlier on Thursday, Britains Ministry of Defence said that Iranian boats tried to impede a British oil tanker near the Gulf, before being driven off by a Royal Navy ship.

Following the seizure of an Iranian oil tanker, allegedly heading to Syria, by British Royal Marines in the Strait of Gibraltar last week, Iran warned Britain of the consequences.

Trump gives the boot to UK ambassador who called him “inept”

By CurtisStone (Peoples Daily Online)16:58, July 11, 2019

Kim Darroch, the British ambassador to the US, has announced his resignation days after leaked cables cast US President Donald Trump in an unflattering light. The announcement was reported by multiple outlets.

British Prime Minister Theresa May called it “a matter of deep regret.”

The leaked cables from the ambassador were exposed by the Daily Mail newspaper, who described Trump as “inept,” “insecure,” and “incompetent” in a series of memos. The cables also warned London that the White House was “uniquely dysfunctional” and that Trump’s career could end in “disgrace.”

These humiliating remarks quickly spread to Trump’s ears and the American president on Monday posted a message on his social media account to announce his displeasure with Darroch and the UK government in general.

Trump said Darroch “is not liked or well-thought of within the US” and that “we will no longer deal with him.” The US president also called the ambassador “wacky” and a “very stupid guy.”

“I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool,” Trump said.

Despite having the full support of Prime Minister May, the British ambassador to the US announced his resignation from the post on Wednesday.

Now, some in the UK are saying that Trump “took the bait” and are posting allegations that the leak was “deliberate” in order to drive Darroch away for revealing the true nature of the Trump administration.

“It seems the deliberate leaking of Kim Darroch’s email was aimed at undermining him, so the new unelected Tory PM can appoint a Trumpian patsy to Washington,” Ben Bradshaw, the Member of Parliament for Exeter, wrote on social media.

Some have even suggested that the “coup” against Darroch is part of a larger battle between Brexit factions. Leave.EU, a political group that supports the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, suggested on July 7 that Darroch needs to go.

“Britain’s anti-Brexit ambassador to the US is what Donald Trump would call a “bad hombre,” the group wrote, adding: “He needs to be banished from Washington and replaced by a favorite of the President.”

How the UK ambassador’s remarks became public is still unknown and might never be known, but what is interesting from this event is that it shows the irony of free speech in America and the lengths to which the US government will go to attack its critics. The UK ambassador gave his opinion on the political situation in the US and the assessments were intended to be secret. However, the US administration is free to attack Darroch and to drive him out of the country.

What this all shows is that the current administration wants to be “boss of the world,” and that the US government will bully its way to the top and even throw its closest allies under the bus for power. This is not leadership; it is hegemonic behavior.

UK financial system resilient to disorderly Brexit BoE

(Xinhua)09:05, July 12, 2019

LONDON, July 11 (Xinhua) — The United Kingdoms (UK) financial system is resilient to and prepared for a wide range of risks, including a worst-case disorderly Brexit, the Bank of England (BoE) said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the BoEs regular Financial Stability Report and Record, the UKs banking system remains strong enough to continue to lend through the wide range of UK economic and financial shocks that could be associated with Brexit.

The perceived likelihood of no-deal Brexit has increased since the start of the year, it said.

The report stated that foreign investment into the UK was much weaker in the first quarter of 2019 than in recent years, adding that the increased Brexit uncertainties … led to a decline in the sterling exchange rate and an underperformance of UK-focused equities.

Despite continued signs of strong risk appetite from creditors and lenders, the bank said that total UK private non-financial sector credit growth has not been rapid and debt servicing burdens remain low.

Most risks to UK financial stability from disruption to cross-border financial services in a no-deal Brexit have been mitigated, it said.

The BoE said that the UK banking system remained resilient to global risks, even though these have increased during the first half of this year.

Even if a protectionist-driven global slowdown were to spill over to the UK at the same time as a worst-case disorderly Brexit, … the core UK banking system would be strong enough to absorb, rather than amplify, the resulting economic shocks, the BoE said.

Netanyahu, Trump hold phone call over Iran

(Xinhua)09:09, July 12, 2019

JERUSALEM, July 11 (Xinhua) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call about security issues including Iran, Netanyahus office said Thursday, a day after Trump threatened to increase sanctions on Tehran.

A statement released by Israeli Prime Ministers Office said the two leaders talked about regional developments and security issues, first and foremost Iran.

Netanyahu expressed appreciation for Trumps intention to ratchet up nuclear-related sanctions on Iran, the office said.

The White House has confirmed the phone talk and said it was held on Wednesday.

The two leaders discussed cooperation between the United States and Israel in advancing shared national security interests, including efforts to prevent Irans malign actions in the region, Judd Deere, White House spokesman, told journalists on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Trump repeated his threat to increase sanctions on Tehran.

Iran has long been secretly enriching in total violation of the terrible 150-billion-U.S.-dollar deal made by John Kerry and the Obama administration, Trump tweeted.

Remember, that deal was to expire in a short number of years. Sanctions will soon be increased, substantially! he added.

Netanyahu has been a vocal opponent of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers.

British ambassador to US resigns in row over leaked anti-Trump messages

(Xinhua)07:30, July 11, 2019

LONDON, July 10 (Xinhua) — Britains Ambassador to the U.S. Kim Darroch resigned Wednesday as a diplomatic row continued over leaked messages critical of President Donald Trump.

Darroch resigned in a letter to Britains top diplomat Simon McDonald, in which he said: Since the leak of official documents from this (Washington) Embassy there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding my position and the duration of my remaining term as ambassador. I want to put an end to that speculation. The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like. I believe in the current circumstances the responsible course is to allow the appointment of a new ambassador.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said in the House of Commons that Darroch had been told he had her cabinets full confidence as Britains man in Washington.

She said the resignation was a matter of great regret. We owe him a debt of gratitude, she added.

In messages intended to be kept top secret Darroch had described Trumps administration as inept and clumsy. The U.S. President essentially declared the ambassador persona-non-grata and said the White House would no longer engage with him.

An investigation is now under way to track down the mole, believed to be a Whitehall insider, who leaked the diplomatic telegrams to the media.

During his 42-year diplomatic career, Darroch has specialised in national security issues and European Union policy. He became ambassador to the U.S. in January 2016, a year before Donald Trumps presidential inauguration.

Trump to meet with Pakistani PM in late July

(Xinhua)08:38, July 11, 2019

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on July 22 at the White House, discussing counterterrorism and other issues, according to a statement released by the White House on Wednesday.

Trump and Khan will discuss a range of issues, including counterterrorism, defense, energy and trade, the statement said.

It will be Khans first visit to the United States since he assumed office in August last year.

Washington and Islamabad have been at odds over the U.S. war in Afghanistan. Last month, Pakistan rejected a report issued by the U.S. State Department on International Religious Freedom, saying the segment on Pakistan is a compendium of unsubstantiated and biased assertions.

China ready to participate in triangular cooperation in UN peacekeeping operations envoy

(Xinhua)08:50, July 11, 2019

UNITED NATIONS, July 10 (Xinhua) — A Chinese UN envoy said Wednesday that China attaches great importance to and is ready to actively participate in triangular cooperation in UN peacekeeping operations.

At a Security Council meeting on the triangular cooperation, namely between the UN Security Council, the troop/police-contributing countries (T/PCCs) and the UN Secretariat, Wu Haitao, Chinas deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said China supports the Security Council in strengthening communication with T/PCCs and the secretariat, and working together to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations.

Moreover, he said, China would like to leverage its own advantages in the field of training, through strengthening coordination with the secretariat, to focus on helping developing troop-contributing countries to strengthen their capacity building.

Noting that China is an important participant in UN peacekeeping operations, Wu said at present, more than 2,500 Chinese peacekeepers are implementing mandates in eight mission areas.

China has already established a peacekeeping standby force of 8,000 troops and two standby peacekeeping police units, he added.

Through concrete actions, China will continue to make its own contributions to enhancing the capacity of UN peacekeeping operations and honor its commitments to world peace, Wu said.

At the meeting, UN Undersecretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix said strong triangular cooperation is crucial for enhancing peacekeeping operations.

The common work of the council, the T/PCCs and the secretariat, along with other stakeholders, will be key to ensuring continued progress, he said, adding the benefits of the triangular cooperation apply to the safety and security of the peacekeepers, as well as to the performance of the operations.
