BEIJING, July 30 — Eateries, malls and cinemas have taken the front seat in witnessing Chinas robust consumption after dark as summer fuels an appetite for nighttime services, according to a report released by Alibaba.

Since June, the market for nighttime food delivery services has significantly expanded and seen a growing legion of takeaway delivery drivers, according to data from Eleme, Alibabas flagship takeaway-ordering app.

In many third- and fourth-tier cities, the number of couriers bustling around at night grew by over 60 percent year on year, while second-tier cities saw the strongest growth in take-out services after 9 p.m.

Busy delivery men at night are seen as an indicator of a citys nighttime economy vitality, according to Alibaba. Over one-third of couriers are still on the road in the small hours in Shenzhen, Xiamen and Foshan.

The Alibaba report also showed marked regional difference. Amid the top 10 vibrant cities of nighttime consumption, nine are in southern China and Beijing is the only northern city listed.

Besides catering services, consumption of cultural services at night is also growing. The report said the young preferred watching films at night, with the cities of Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing and Hangzhou leading the viewership.

In terms of shopping, Alibabas online mall Taobao saw the largest number of purchases made during 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. for the day, while over 83 percent of the businesses on Alibabas local services platform Koubei are still in service an hour before midnight.

Chinas consumer resilience robust despite headwinds survey

(Xinhua)11:01, July 29, 2019

BEIJING, July 27 — Chinas household income and consumption growth stayed strong despite domestic and overseas headwinds, a survey showed.

About 78 percent of the 3,000 respondents reported increases in salary, rising from the previous 75 percent, according to the latest China consumer survey released by global investment bank UBS.

Meanwhile, more property owners saw appreciation of their property value in the past two years, while nearly 70 percent of respondents reported a better financial situation, and 55 percent felt very well protected financially, both higher than before.

Some low-income families reported that tax cuts have helped to ease household tax burdens, as China lowered personal income tax. About 33 percent of the respondents increased consumption in the past 12 months on a net basis, higher than the previous 21 percent.

The China-U.S. trade dispute seems to have had little adverse impact on consumer spending, consumer confidence and consumer finance for the respondents, according to the survey.

Respondents confidence in future income, financial situation and financial protection over the next 12 months remain robust.

UBS said confidence in future income and financial situations should support consumption, albeit at a softer pace.

Chinese consumers are more willing to raise spending for the next 12 months on quality of life related items, such as sports, education, travel and healthcare, and are willing to defer less pressing items such as auto purchase, the report showed.

Economic Watch Chinas consumer inflation stable, factory prices rebound

(Xinhua)16:46, July 09, 2020

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) — Chinas consumer inflation remained generally stable in June under the countrys continued efforts toward economic recovery, while factory-gate prices picked up from May as demand warms, official data showed Thursday.

The consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, grew 2.5 percent year on year last month, expanding from the 2.4-percent gain in May, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.1 percent. Food prices, which account for nearly one-third of weighting in Chinas CPI, went up 0.2 percent last month.

In breakdown, pork prices rebounded to climb 3.6 percent from May as supply contracted over factors including declining hog production and pork import, as well as increasing demand from catering industry. Prices of vegetables rose 2.8 percent from May over flood in many regions across China and temporary closure of the Xinfadi farm produce wholesale market in Beijing for COVID-19 control.

Compared with the same period last year, food prices remained a major driver of consumer inflation in June, as its growth rate strengthened from May to 11.1 percent.

Excluding food and energy, the core CPI rose 0.9 percent over last year, down from 1.1 percent in May, according to Dong Lijuan, a senior statistician with the NBS.

The 0.9-percent core CPI growth is a record low, said Wen Bin, chief analyst at China Minsheng Bank, in a co-authored research note.

Food supply and demand is basically balanced amid the recovery of economic activities and government measures to keep prices stable, and consumer prices will be generally steady despite some fluctuations, said Wen.

In the first half of this year, the CPI went up 3.8 percent year on year on average.

Thursdays data also showed Chinas producer price index (PPI), which measures costs for goods at the factory gate, went down 3 percent year on year in June, narrowing from the 3.7-percent decrease in May.

On a month-on-month basis, the PPI rose 0.4 percent last month, compared with a 0.4-percent fall in May.

Market demand continued to improve in June, as prices of international bulk commodities rebounded and the domestic manufacturing sector recovered steadily, said Dong.

Prices for oil and natural gas extraction rebounded to surge 38.2 percent from May, while those for the processing of oil, coal and other fuel went up 1.7 percent on a monthly basis.

In the coming months, the CPI is expected to retreat as market supply and demand maintain balance, in hopes of staying within the 3.5-percent annual target by the end of the year, according to Wen.

The tapering consumer inflation will open up room for monetary policy measures to spur the real economy and ramp up support to manufacturers as well as micro, small and medium companies, he said.

Tesla Shanghai gigafactory to use more AI, smarter software Elon Musk

(Xinhua)17:19, July 09, 2020

SHANGHAI, July 9 (Xinhua) — More AI and essentially smarter software will be used at the Tesla Shanghai gigafactory, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) on Thursday.

Musk also pointed out it will take a while to fully employ AI effectively in a factory situation.

According to Musk, a factory can be regarded as a complex, cybernetic collective involving humans and machines. The robot component of manufacturing companies is much higher.

I think over time there will be both more jobs and having jobs will be optional. One of the false premises sometimes people have about economics is that theres a finite number of jobs. There is definitely not a finite number of jobs, he said, adding that his biggest concern about growth is being able to find enough humans.

At the end of his speech, Musk expressed gratitude for the hard work of the Chinese team and wished to pay a visit to China next year.

The WAIC 2020 is to be held in Shanghai from July 9 to July 11.

Starbucks has planned to invest $129 million in building a coffee roasting facility in Kunshan, east China鈥檚 Jiangsu province.

Lawson, a Japanese convenience store franchise chain, announced that it will add another 200 million yuan ($28.5 million) to its investment in the Chinese market.

U.S. retail giant Costco confirmed last February a plan to open its second store on the Chinese mainland.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a short-term impact on their business, but it won鈥檛 influence their confidence in seeking long-term development in China, foreign enterprises said.

Facing the impact the pandemic is having on catering businesses, Pizza Hut restaurants run by China鈥檚 largest restaurant company, Yum China Holdings, Inc., have witnessed a new momentum of development since their efforts to innovate products and services.

These restaurants launched set meals for one, started to sell take-out raw steak for people to cook at home, added popular crayfish dishes to the menu, all while making constant efforts to innovate flavors of their food.

鈥淎s of the end of April, 99 percent of our restaurants in China had resumed part or all of their business,鈥?said Qu Cuirong, CEO of Yum China.

Pizza Hut restaurants have seen rapid growth of the sales volume of takeout food and food sold via delivery services since the outbreak of the COVID-19, Qu said, adding that the increase in online orders has effectively curbed the overall decline of sales.

鈥淎lthough our business has been affected by the COVID-19, Yum China is still optimistic about China鈥檚 long-term development and won鈥檛 change our goal of opening 800 to 850 new outlets in China this year,鈥?Qu said.

During this year鈥檚 Dragon Boat Festival holiday, Sephora, a French multinational cosmetics chain, opened three new stores at the same time in Nanchang, capital of east China鈥檚 Jiangxi province, Changsha, capital of central China鈥檚 Hunan province, and Linyi, in east China鈥檚 Shandong province.

As the pandemic situation improves and consumption is returning to normal, the overall performance of the high-end beauty products market is showing a positive trend, an executive of Sephora pointed out.

It can be seen that the consumer needs are always there, and Sephora is planning to keep investing in China, the executive shared.

Che Wenhuan, deputy manager of Beijing Lawson Co., Ltd., disclosed, 鈥淏y June 29, we had opened 11 new stores in Tianjin municipality. Our first store in Hebei province will also open in early July.

Although Lawson鈥檚 business in certain outlets located near office buildings and schools has been obviously affected by the COVID-19, the company isn鈥檛 suspending its plan to continue to open new stores in China.

鈥淯rban residents have strong consumption ability against the background of consumption upgrading, so we will not change our idea of continuing to open new stores and will not stop expanding our business in China,鈥?Che said.

Lawson has announced earlier that it will increase its number of chain stores in China to 3,000 this year, and is projected to exceed 10,000 by 2025.

鈥淲e have confidence in achieving this year鈥檚 goal,鈥?Che said.

German manufacturer of household appliances, Vorwerk Group, has not seen a decline in its sales since the outbreak of COVID-19. Instead, the company has recorded a slight increase in sales volume.

鈥淭he pandemic has very little influence on home appliance enterprises, which have long before started to use smart new retail platforms or adopted omni-channel operation,鈥?said Zha Sheng, Vorwerk鈥檚 general manager for China.

Many of Vorwerk鈥檚 small home appliances even became a hot sale since the pandemic, for they meet consumers鈥?needs while they stay at home to avoid cross-infection, Zha disclosed.

鈥淲e have seen that the Chinese government has shown powerful capacity to curb the spread of the pandemic during the fight against the COVID-19. This is the fundamental reason why we have confidence in the Chinese market,鈥?Zha noted.

From January to March, over 200,000 new products have been released on Alibaba鈥檚 shopping platform Tmall Global, while the growth rate of newly opened stores of foreign brands rose to 327 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from Tmall Global.

鈥淭he pandemic has blocked foreign brands鈥?offline channels and made online platforms a popular choice for expanding sales. Many new foreign brands have sped up efforts to expand its market and seek new growth in China,鈥?said Liu Peng, general manager of Tmall鈥檚 import and export business unit.
