2020 Chinese Super League season to start in July?

(Xinhua)15:41, June 25, 2020

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) — The long-delayed 2020 Chinese Super League (CSL) season may finally begin in mid-to-late July.

Thats the view of Huang Shenghua, CEO of CSL side Guangzhou RF, but all 16 top-flight clubs are still waiting for final confirmation from the Chinese Football Association, according to a report by the Guangzhou-based Information Times.

We are waiting to see what will happen in the next three weeks, Huang was quoted as saying.

This years CSL season, previously scheduled to start on February 22, was postponed until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was reported that the new season would abandon the standard home-and-away format, and that the 16 teams would be divided into two groups on a geographical basis, with one group playing each other in the northeastern port city of Dalian, and the other facing off in Suzhou, east China.

As Suzhou is not a home city for any CSL teams, Dalian Yifang, which finished 9th in the 2019 season, would be the only side enjoying home turf.

Huang said that neutral venues are fair to all teams.

Guangzhou RF finished 12th in the CSL season.

China football clubs preparing for top league to restart in late July

(Xinhua)09:07, June 28, 2020

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) — Chinese top-flight clubs are preparing for the delayed 2020 season to restart on July 25, according to local media report on Saturday.

The new season of the Chinese Super League (CSL), which had scheduled to kick off on February 22, was suspended indefinitely by the outbreak of the COVID-19, has been rumored to restart on July 25.

All the CSL clubs have learned from unofficial channels that the league will be resumed on that date and are making preparations accordingly, a report from news outlet Jintiyu said.

Though the Chinese Football Association (CFA) is yet to get its epidemic control plans approved by the authorities, the CSL clubs are following the plans to prepare for the leagues resumption, the report said.

The CSL 2020 campaign will not restart until the virus is under control in China, said the CFAs anti-epidemic consultant Zhang Wenhong last week.

The goal of our battle against the virus is to keep the cases dwindling close to zero. So we are more cautious and need more time, said Zhang, a leading expert in Chinas efforts in containing the outbreak.

The resurgence of the virus in Beijing cast new doubt over the resumption of football leagues in China.

Beijing reported 17 new confirmed domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases and four asymptomatic cases Friday, the municipal health commission said Saturday.

From June 11 to 26, Beijing reported 297 confirmed locally transmitted cases, all of whom were receiving treatment. Meanwhile, there are 25 asymptomatic cases still under medical observation, the commission said.

China successfully tests accurate landing of rocket debris

(Xinhua)14:54, July 29, 2019

BEIJING, July 28 — China has successfully tested the technology that can accurately control the landing site of falling rocket parts, making progress toward reusable launch vehicles in the future, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) said on Sunday.

The CASC said that the test was carried out following a Long March-2C rocket launched on Friday, and focused on grid fins which are like wings on rocket core part to increase precision in control of its landing location.

According to experts from the CASC, the rocket flight trajectory is designed to avoid densely populated areas. But after completing the mission, the rocket debris falls under no control with a wide range of landing points which sometimes involve inhabited areas.

In order to ensure the safety of peoples lives and property, the currently practice is to evacuate people to the safety zone before each mission, which is not only inconvenient for the local people, but increases the cost and task difficulty.

The success of the test is of great significance for improving Chinas inland rocket landing safety, minimizing the inconvenience to the local people, as well as promoting the follow-up development of carrier rockets controllable recovery, soft landing and reuse, according to He Wei, an official with the CASC.

The swinging grid fins were used to control the rocket debris direction and attitude, much like the wings of the debris, said Cui Zhaoyun, the deputy chief designer of Long March-2C rocket. The landing site control of large and medium rockets is much more difficult than that of small rockets, he added.

Rubio’s absurdity knows no bounds

By Curtisstone (Peoples Daily Online)18:00, July 26, 2019

On July 25, a spokesperson for the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) hit back at America’s most radical anti-China politician Marco Rubio. Rubio alleged that “Communist Party of China used organized crime groups to attack protesters in Hong Kong” and that “they are violating everything they agreed in Hong Kong handover.” The spokesperson denounced the remarks of the US senator on Hong Kong as “absolute nonsense.”

In fact, Rubio is known to stir up trouble. In February, Rubio threatened Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro with a graphic picture of the brutal murder of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi as part of a social media campaign to try to incite a civil war. It was a shocking look into the mind of a man who will go to extreme lengths to promote his personal agenda in other countries. Twitter users blasted the US senator as a “psychopath,” “sick and twisted,” and “manic warmonger.”

Rubio has a record of maliciously attacking China and confusing right and wrong without any moral sense, as the spokesperson said. And this is exactly what he is doing when he took to social media to provoke the relationship between Hong Kong and the central government of China, once again revealing his malicious intentions.

“To some American politicians, only violence in their countries counts as violence, while violence in other countries and regions is a matter of human rights and freedom; only those who attack the police and endanger social order in their countries are rioters, while those damaging public property, storming government institutions and even assaulting the police elsewhere are human rights and freedom fighters,” the spokesperson said.

This shows that there is a double-standard when it comes to China. In any civilized society, violence is unacceptable and should be condemned.

For example, some American politicians have labeled Antifa—a political protest movement opposed to extreme right-wing ideology—as domestic terrorists. After the group took to the streets of Portland, Oregon, disorder broke out. In response, Bill Cassidy and Ted Cruz introduced a resolution condemning the violent acts conducted by Antifa and calling for the designation of the group as a domestic terrorist organization. Cruz called Antifa “a terrorist organization composed of hateful, intolerant radicals who pursue their extreme agenda through aggressive violence.”

Would they still label Antifa as terrorists if they were protesting in Hong Kong? They are more likely than not to fan the flames of violence, just like Rubio did when he threatened Maduro with Gaddafi’s gruesome fate. This is hypocrisy and absurdity at its finest.

Since Hong Kong’s return to China, the central government has been committed to the principles of “one country, two systems,” “Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong,” and a high degree of autonomy in the special administrative region. As a result, the spokesperson said, Hong Kong has maintained its prosperity and stability, and its people now enjoy unprecedentedly extensive rights and freedoms in accordance with law.

No matter what garbage comes out of Rubio’s mouth, it is impossible to change these facts.

SpaceX launches research facilities to Intl Space Station

(Xinhua)15:50, July 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, July 25 — The U.S. space agency NASAs cargo provider SpaceX launched a Dragon spacecraft on Thursday, starting its resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The spacecraft, packed with about 2,268 kg of research, crew supplies and vehicle hardware, lifted off at 6:01 p.m. EDT (1001 GMT) from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the U.S. state of Florida.

About 10 minutes later, the second-stage engine has burnt completely and Dragon confirmed in good orbit, according to SpaceXs official Twitter account.

ISS crew members will use the stations 17.6-meter robotic arm to capture Dragon and attach it to the orbiting lab on Saturday, according to SpaceX.

Among Dragons payloads is NASAs International Docking Adapter-3, where Boeings CST-100 Starliner and SpaceXs Crew Dragon spacecraft will dock in the near future to transport astronauts to the station.

The Dragon spacecraft also brought into space the BioFabrication Facility, designed to print organ-like tissues in microgravity, a stepping stone in a long-term plan to manufacture whole human organs in space using refined biological 3D printing techniques, according to NASA.

An investigation to be conducted on the ISS, the Biorock, developed by researchers from University of Edinburgh, will scrutinize the physical interactions of liquid, rocks and microorganisms under microgravity conditions for biomining in space.

The reusable spacecraft will spend approximately one month attached to the ISS before returning to Earth.

China’s crayfish industry booms

Chinese consumers’ appetite for crayfish has given a strong boost to the industry.

According to a report released by Meituan-Dianping, a provider of on-demand services, the Chinese consumed about 45,000 tons of crayfish through the platform in 2018, with more than 140,000 new crayfish restaurants compared to in 2017.

Last year, the crayfish industry generated over 100 billion yuan in economic value and offered more than 5 million job opportunities, including jobs as employees to peel the shells of crayfish for customers.

Huda Restaurant in Beijing rolled out the “shell-peeling” service, providing convenience for those who love eating crayfish but hate peeling the crustaceans, which is a notoriously messy business.

Guo Dong, general manager of the restaurant, said they accommodate about 20,000 diners every day for nearly 1,000 kilograms of crayfish during the peak season.

“Our service is widely accepted by the customers, and help increase sales of crayfish,” Guo added.

Huahua, one of the “shell-peeling” service providers at the restaurant, said some of her colleagues could earn about 10,000 yuan per month.

The booming crayfish market also inspired a vocational college to run a crayfish major. The course was established in Jianghan Art Vocational College in central China’s Hubei Province in 2017.

The first batch of graduates majoring in crayfish studies at the college all secured employment, with the highest salary exceeding 10,000 yuan per month.

Some people attributed the high employment rate to the fact that the major is highly market-oriented.

NASA begins fueling Mars 2020 rover power system

(Xinhua)08:31, July 26, 2019

LOS ANGELES, July 24 — NASA has begun fueling the Mars 2020 rovers Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG), which will power the rover and help keep it warm while exploring the Red Planet, according to a release of NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) on Wednesday.

The progression of the Mars 2020 rover project is on schedule, said NASAs Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate Thomas Zurbuchen.

The decision to begin fueling the MMRTG is another important milestone in keeping to our timetable for a July 2020 launch, he said.

Essentially a nuclear battery, an MMRTG can provide about 110 watts of electrical power to a spacecraft and its science instruments at the beginning of a mission, said the JPL.

The excess heat from the generator can also serve to keep spacecraft systems warm in cold environments.

In all, 27 past U.S. space missions have used radioisotope power — from the Viking missions on Mars to the Voyager spacecraft entering interplanetary space to, most recently, the Curiosity rover on Mars and the New Horizons spacecraft that sailed past Pluto.

We are advancing on all fronts — including completion of the cruise stage that will guide us to Mars and the sky crane descent landing system that will gently lower us to the surface, said Project Manager John McNamee of the JPL, which manages the Mars 2020 mission. The rover is not only looking more and more like a rover each day, it is acting like one.

With the exception of incorporating the Adaptive Caching Assembly, with its seven motors and more than 3,000 parts, work on the Mars 2020 rovers interior is 100 percent complete, said the JPL.

On the exterior, the most visible additions have been the remote sensing mast, the mobility suspension system, the main robotic arm and the rovers high-gain antenna.

The external components of the Mastcam-Z and SuperCam science instruments have been installed on the high perch of the remote sensing mast, and some key instruments turret assemblies have been added onto the end of the robotic arm, said the JPL.

Mars 2020 rover is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida in July 2020, and land at Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021.

It will be the first spacecraft in the history of planetary exploration with the ability to accurately retarget its point of touchdown during the landing sequence — technology that could prove essential to future crewed missions to the Moon and Mars, said the JPL.

U.S. should respect facts and reject bias on freedom of religious belief in China

By ZhongSheng (Peoples Daily)09:05, July 22, 2019

Chinese government protects citizens’ right to freedom of religious belief, which is a fact that any conscientious and impartial person recognizes.

However, such fact has been denied by some U.S. officials.

On July 18, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo slandered the religious policy and the freedom of religious belief in China at a U.S. conference to “advance religious freedom”.

They even collaborated with cult members, which exposed to the world their ugliness and hypocrisy.

Some U.S. politicians have long been slandering China with fabricated stories, and are even undermining ethnic harmony and interfering in the internal affairs of China.

Fortunately, lies cannot stand long. The reckless endorsement of Pence, which was full of self-contradictories, has become a butt of a joke for the world.

On one hand, he said China “persecuted” religions; on the other hand, he claimed that in China, he actually saw the fastest growth in the Christian faith that world has ever seen in the last 2,000 years. How could this have happened without freedom of religious belief?

To know what it is that you know, and to know what it is that you do not know – that is understanding. However, these U.S. politicians are being hypocritic by acting wise or foolish. It seems like they are interested in the freedom of religious belief in Xinjiang, but indeed they know nothing about the facts there.

Xinjiang is home to over 24,800 venues for religious activities such as mosques, churches and temples. Among them, there are about 24,400 mosques, over twice as much as those in the U.S., the UK, Germany and French together. A mosque is built for every 530 Muslims.

A total of 109 religious sites in Xinjiang, including Id Kah Mosque in Kashgar, Shengyou Lamasery in Zhaosu, and the Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves have been designated as major cultural heritage sites under the protection of the autonomous region and the state.

China’s efforts to care for the Muslims were commended atthe 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the organization said it is willing to enhance cooperation with China.

Of course, for those who have evil intensions, such facts that prove China’s freedom of religious belief would only cause obstacles for them to slander China. Therefore, they have to hide such reality.

As for the vocational education and training centers in Xinjiang, which have been frequently cited by the U.S., they are just another trick played by the U.S.to distain China. Any righteous and responsible member of the international society can see through the trick and choose not to follow the U.S.

Setting up the vocational education and training centers in Xinjiang, China is making every effort to protect the fundamental human rights of citizens from violation by terrorism and extremism. For nearly 3 years, no violent terrorist attacks have taken place in Xinjiang since the establishment of these centers, and the fundamental human rights of the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang have been effectively protected.

Xinjiang’s human rights achievements, as well as its progress made in anti-terrorism and de-extremization have been recognized on multiple occasions amid the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The representatives from Cameron, Cambodia, North Korea and Myanmar noted that China’s preventive counterterrorism approaches, including setting up vocational education and training centers in Xinjiang and other places, are a great combination of anti-terrorism and human rights protection, and deserve support and praise.

The representatives from Laos, Serbia, Burundi, Somalia and Nepal said that it is total slander that the west calls these centers “re-education camps”, and China’s experiences in anti-terrorism and de-extremization are worth learning from.

There is a Chinese saying that justice naturally inhabits man’s heart. China has made remarkable achievements in human rights protection in Xinjiang, and the progress of anti-terrorism and de-extremization is serving as an important guarantee for the flourishing social development and livelihood in the region. These are undeniable facts.

Ambassadors of 37 countries to the UN office at Geneva recently sent a joint letter to the President of the UN Human Rights Council and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to show their support for China on its remarkable achievements in the field of human rights, as well as counter-terrorism and de-radicalization measures in Xinjiang.

The letter stressed that the people in Xinjiang enjoy a stronger sense of happiness, fulfillment and security, saying that China has undertaken a series of counter-terrorism and de-radicalization measures in Xinjiang, including setting up vocational education and training centers, which effectively guaranteed the fundamental human rights of the people of all ethnic groups in the region.

These envoys praised China’s practice of inviting ambassadors, international organization officials as well as media practitioners to Xinjiang, and called on relevant countries to refrain from employing unfounded charges against China based on unconfirmed information before they visit Xinjiang.

Why is the U.S. turning a deaf ear to such righteous voices?

China is willing to open its arms and welcome the discussion on religious and human rights issues with friendly countries and experts. The country has been taking an active part in the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review, and has decided to accept 284 recommendations, or 82% of the total in the third round of the review that took place in March this year. The number and proportion of recommendations accepted by China were among the highest in major countries.

China, working in concert with the world, including developing countries and beyond to advance development through cooperation and promote human rights through development, is demonstrating its sense of responsibility as a major country.

On the contrary, the U.S. unexpectedly withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council with a fear that other countries might accuse it of human rights violation. It is falling behind the world in the practices of human rights issues.

Only by respecting facts and rejecting bias can a country build its credibility in the international society. And the fact of China’s justified practices can never be denied by the remarks by Pence and Pompeo. The ungrounded slanders made by the U.S. will only hurt its own image.

We advise that the U.S. get down to the business that helps build the mutual trust between Washington and Beijing, so as to create peace and tranquility for the world.

China issues white paper on historical matters concerning Xinjiang

(Xinhua)08:09, July 22, 2019

BEIJING, July 21 — The State Council Information Office on Sunday issued a white paper on historical matters concerning Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China.

China is a unified multiethnic country, and the various ethnic groups in Xinjiang have long been part of the Chinese nation. Throughout its long history, Xinjiangs development has been closely related to that of China, the white paper said.

However, in more recent times, hostile forces in and outside China, especially separatists, religious extremists and terrorists, have tried to split China and break it apart by distorting history and facts, the document, titled Historical Matters Concerning Xinjiang, said.

Xinjiang has long been an inseparable part of Chinese territory. Never has it been the so-called East Turkistan. The Uygur ethnic group came into being through a long process of migration and integration, the white paper said, adding that it is part of the Chinese nation.

In Xinjiang, different cultures and religions coexist, and ethnic cultures have been fostered and developed in the embrace of the Chinese civilization. Islam is neither an indigenous nor the sole belief system of the Uygur people. It has taken root in the Chinese culture and developed soundly in China, the document said.

The surge in religious extremism around the world has caused a rise in religious extremism in Xinjiang and has resulted in an increasing number of incidents of terror and violence, it noted.

Xinjiangs fight against terrorism and extremism is a battle for justice and civilization against evil and barbaric forces. As such it deserves support, respect and understanding, it said.

The document said that some countries, organizations and individuals that apply double standards to terrorism and human rights have issued unjustified criticism of Xinjiangs effort. This kind of criticism betrays the basic conscience and justice of humanity, and will be repudiated by all genuine champions of justice and progress, it said.

Chinese-funded water project to help ease water shortage in Quetta, Pakistan

(Xinhua)11:34, July 22, 2019

QUETTA, Pakistan, July 22 — The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan has handed over a sustainable water project to Pakistans southwest provincial capital Quetta as part of Chinas ongoing efforts to build more social development projects in the country.

Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy Zhao Lijian on Sunday inaugurated the project of five ready-to-use solar-powered tube wells and gave it to Quettas Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA), the sole water distributor in the provincial capital of the southwest Balochistan province.

Managing Director of WASA Mujeeb Ur Rehman Qambrani told Xinhua here that Quetta, with a population of 2.5 million people, is undergoing drinking water issues owing to rapid urbanization, increasing population growth and alarming underground water depletion.

During the handover ceremony, Zhao said the project is a gift from the Chinese Embassy for the people of Quetta, adding that several projects like the tube well program have already been started in different parts of Balochistan, especially in southwest Gwadar city.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistans Parliament Qasim Suri said that his hometown Quetta has been suffering from water shortage for the last several years. He appreciated Chinas quick response on the Pakistani sides request and established the tube wells.

A local businessman, Haji Jalil, told Xinhua that they had to spend a big portion of their incomes to buy water, but now he hoped that they would be able to save their money to spend on other needs.
