Protecting gulls in desert in NW China

(Xinhua)16:21, June 30, 2020

YINCHUAN, June 30 (Xinhua) — On the edge of the vast Maowusu Desert in Lingwu City, northwest Chinas Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, salt lakes of various sizes dot the sandy area.

The lakes are formed by the water discharged from the nearby collieries owned by Ningxia Coal Industry Group Co., Ltd under the state-owned China Energy. The water has to meet standards before it is released. From early April to late August each year, a group of special guests fly to the area: the Relict Gulls.

The black-headed, red-beaked migratory birds were discovered and recognized as a new species in the 1970s. In 2000, they were listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. China places the gulls under class one state-protected wild animals.

In Ningxia, the rare birds were never seen before 2016.

The gulls love to rest on the islets inside the lakes. Currently, they are breeding on the islets, with some birdlings already hatched. To protect their offspring, the adult gulls cover their nests most of the time.

In May 2016, the staff of Ningxias wetland protection and management center found more than 800 Relict Gulls over the lakes beside the coal mines on the Maowusu Desert, said Wei Hong, an engineer with the center. It was the first time that the gulls were found in Ningxia.

The gulls have very strict requirements for their habitat. They like resting in open, plain areas, or in salt lakes in deserts and semideserts, and feed on aquatic insects. They only breed in islets inside the lakes.

The salt lakes here are formed by standard mine water, and they are perfect for the gulls, Wei said. There is little human interference, and after we discovered their existence, we sent people to conduct routine patrols.

For the company operating the coal mines, the arrival of the birds is both a surprise and a responsibility.

We never thought that the mine water could attract the rare birds, and we need to protect their habitat, said Li Baoqiang, with the Ningxia Coal Industry Group Co., Ltd. We supervise the quality of the mine water we discharge, and we also pay attention to the water levels in the lakes so that the islets stay a certain distance from the lake surface.

According to Wei Hong, the environment in the birds habitat is so good that the number of gulls has increased rapidly. This year, they have observed more than 3,800 Relict Gulls. Besides, other birds, such as whooper swans, shelducks and black-winged stilts, have all flocked to the islets. The bird paradise has attracted bird watchers from a variety of places across China.

These days, the lakes have become a favorite place for the birds. However, as the lakes are rich in coal mines underneath, the area might become a place for mining in a few years. Last year, under the guidance of the regional wetland protection and management center, Ningxia Coal Industry Group Co., Ltd began building a wetland park not far from the lakes to help retain the gulls. The park has already attracted some gulls.

The company discharges the mine water collectively and has formed a wetland of more than 1,333 hectares, said Li Baoqiang. We also built a water project and grew a tree belt 5 km long and 20 meters wide. A wetland park management center was also established.

Li, who was a mine worker for a long time, is now tasked with protecting the birds with more than 20 other mine workers.

Surveillance equipment has been installed around the wetland, and we take turns patrolling the area to prevent poaching or damaging the environment, Li said.

Li said that he did not recognize any of the birds in the past, but now that he sees them every day, he knows them better.

Patrolling under the sun every day is not easy, but it makes me happy to see that the environment is getting better and the number of birds is increasing, he said.

Reliving the memory of Shanghai Expo part I The Chinese elements

By LiZhenyu (Peoples Daily Online)08:25, July 01, 2020

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Ten years ago, the world witnessed an open, prosperous and modern China during the six-month grand pageant. The glorious exhibitions provided the world with immeasurable enlightenment and enjoyment, at which China and countries from around the globe showcased their culture and prowess.

Ten years later, the Shanghai Expo site has presently become a popular tourist attraction in the city. Some of the buildings created for the expo, such as the China Art Museum and River Mall, have become the main venues for hosting cultural events.

There is an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. This sentiment especially rings true when it comes to describing the modernity, vitality and beauty of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Although the majority of the pavilions have been removed from the once magnificent Expo Park, this three part series will make an effort to construct, through both the lenses and texts, an online World Expo, the curtain of which will never drop.

The first part focuses on the legendary China Pavilion, the Chinese elements at the Expo, among other topics.

China Pavilion: Reflecting Chinese wisdom and culture

The China Pavilion was the most eye-catching and then hottest pavilion at the Expo Park.

The charm of this giant red pavilion, based on my personal experience and on-the-ground interviews, originated from its contour design with several distinctive features inside.

The facade of the China Pavilion was among the most impressive. There were some 200 national pavilions at the Expo Park and The Crown of the East stood out as both the largest and the highest one. Its exterior design reflected the spirit and disposition of Chinese culture well.

Entering into the pavilion, you may experience the original Chinese culture through the three themed exhibitions – Footprint of the East, Journey of Wisdom and Blossoming City, which respectively represented the development of Chinas urbanization, the countrys traditional architecture, and its energy thrift and environmentally friendly future construction.

The pavilions core exhibition area was on the top story where an eight-minute film, The Journey, was shown. The themed film of the China Pavilion showed, in an imposing fashion, a flow of beautiful scenery, sentimental moments and historical occasions, profiling Chinas vast urbanization process, peoples enthusiasm for building a better city at present and pursuing a better life in the future.

Another stunning feature inside the China Pavilion was the 100-meter version of the panoramic painting – Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival. The painting, known as a national treasure in China, displayed a scene in the prosperous ancient city of Bianjing, presently known as Kaifeng in central Chinas Henan Province. Modern technologies allowed the panoramic painting to be alive, with more than 1,500 of its characters walking and moving.

The China Pavilion enabled Expo-goers to see, experience and feel the essence of Chinese wisdom and culture.

The Aurora Pavilion was the sole pavilion from China鈥檚 Taiwan among all the 18 corporate pavilions. The Aurora Groups Expo 2010 Pavilion featured rare exhibits such as a 2.5-ton piece of jade and Beijing Olympic medals made of fine jade. Stepping out of the Aurora Pavilion, a tourist could experience the soul of Chinese jades 8,000-year history through a short journey of 20 minutes.

Chinese elements at the World Expo

Ten years ago, the Shanghai World Expo attracted feverish attention from around the world. Although the Shanghai event set one record after another in terms of the number of participating countries and regions, the size of the Expo park, and the number of visitors, among others, is what made the six-month grand gala truly memorable outside of the statistics.

China increases environmental protection through public interest litigations

(Xinhua)09:47, July 01, 2020

BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) — Chinas procuratorial organs will step up efforts to boost environmental protection, as well as food and drug safety through filing public interest litigations, according to the Supreme Peoples Procuratorate (SPP).

The SPP has decided to launch a three-year supervision campaign to target illegal acts that endanger the public interest in the fields of environmental protection, as well as food and drug safety.

The campaign, which will run from July 2020 to June 2023, will focus on important cases and resolve problems that harm the public interest, the SPP said.

As per the event schedule, from July 2020 to December 2021, procuratorial organs across China will strengthen supervision in six areas:

— illegal discharge of pollutants into waters;

— illegal collection, storage, transportation, utilization and disposal of solid waste;

— illegal generation and discharge of mine tailings;

— disruption of wildlife protection;

— online and offline sales of edible agricultural products and food that fail to meet safety standards;

— misinformation and illegal advertising on health food.

According to the SPP, among the areas that will draw special attention from procuratorial organs are the food safety regulatory loopholes relevant to new forms of online sales, such as internet influencer marketing and live-streaming shopping.

Reliving the memory of Shanghai Expo part II Euro Square highlights

The second part focuses on the highlights of the Euro Square at the Shanghai Expo Park.

Spain Pavilion: Flamenco over wicker basket

Strolling through the splendid Euro Square dotted with various shiny Expo pavilions, there lay a fanciful building that may catch your eye at first glance. It was the national pavilion of Spain, one of the hottest pavilions at the Expo.

As stunning as the pavilion was, which looked like a flowing furbelow of a flamenco dancer, was one of the largest national pavilions at the Shanghai Expo and the worlds first wicker-weaved structure.

A hand-weaved wicker building dressed in more than 8,000 wicker panels, the Spain Pavilion may leave you with an unforgettable impression once you catch sight of it. The simple yet memorable facade resembled a flowing furbelow of a flamenco dancer, or a cloud in the sky, or, to be more down to earth, a giant wicker basket.

Wicker weaving is a tradition in both Spain and China, and the pavilion was like a bridge connecting the two nations.

Covering over 6,000 square meters, the Spain Pavilion was one of the largest national pavilions at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Strolling inside of the Basket, with sunshine penetrating through the wicker, you may enjoy the contrast of light and shadow while soaking up the glamour of the southwestern European nation.

The pavilion contains three exhibition halls sub-themed Origin, Cities and Child, which took visitors through the time and space of the development of cities in Spain with the main theme From the City of Our Parents to the City of Our Children.

Among all the highlights of the Spain Pavilion, what impressed this journalist the most was the live flamenco dancing. This fiery display took place on the same stage that hosts a six-minute film, which is a mixture of nature, passion, sports and arts, designed to explore the origin of Spanish culture. Surrounded by a huge three-dimensional screen, visitors may feel the shaking of the floor when a horde of galloping horses ran by, blending the real with what looked real.

Reliving the memory of Shanghai Expo part III English world highlights

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

10 years ago, the six-month grand pageant allowed the world to witness an open, prosperous and modern China. Spectacular exhibitions provided global audiences with boundless enlightenment and enjoyment, during which China and other countries showcased their cultures and strengths.

10 years on, the Shanghai Expo site has now become a popular tourist attraction in the city. Some of the buildings created for the expo, such as the China Art Museum and River Mall, have become the main venues for hosting major cultural events.

There is an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. This is especially true when it comes to describing the modernity, vitality and beauty of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Although most of the pavilions have now been removed from the formerly magnificent Expo Park, this three-part series will attempt to construct, through both pictures and words, an online World Expo, on which the curtain will never drop.

The last part focuses on the national pavilions of the four major English-speaking countries – the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

USA Pavilion: A small-time movie theatre

Just like the fanciful Spain Pavilion, the USA Pavilion left one of the deepest impressions on this journalist at the Expo Park. The difference, however, was that the impression left by this pavilion, which resembled a small-time cinema, lay at the other end of the spectrum.

Behind all the hype, what this journalist saw with his own eyes in the pavilion decorated with Stars and Stripes was mediocre, to say the least.

While the Spain Pavilion impressed visitors with its flamenco beauty, the Germany Pavilion stood out with its sophisticated innovations, and the Italy Pavilion featured a memorable combination of fashion and classics, what awaited Expo-goers waiting in long lines outside the entrance gate of the USA Pavilion was one low-budget Hollywood blockbuster after another.

The interior of the USA Pavilion looked like a small movie theatre. (File photo: Li Zhenyu)

The pavilion, which could best be described as a small-time movie theatre, consisted of four short films shown in four halls.

The first video featured non-actors on city streets being coached on basic greetings and welcome messages in Mandarin, while spectators stood or sat on the floor. The scene was a bit chaotic, and several negative comments were heard in the audience.

When the lengthy eight-minute overture was over, people were ushered into a second, larger room with seats for the next show, which featured Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton delivering a by-the-book message of general international goodwill.

The most impressive feature of the USA Pavilion, if one could call it that, was the third and last show – The Garden. This so-called 鈥?-D movie鈥? which was a combination of mist, lighting, vibrating seats and a large screen, depicted a little girls quest to turn a run-down city lot into an urban oasis. The scenario was unimaginative, but the manner in which the film was presented and its catchy song left a positive impression on this music-loving journalist.

By the time the three movies were over, you found yourself at the end of this unforgettable US tour.

UK Pavilion: An outstanding emblem of Britain

The eye-catching dandelion-like UK Pavilion was billed as an outstanding emblem of Britain showcasing the nation鈥檚 modern, creative and innovative sides to the world. It was designed as a dramatic demonstration of UK innovation and creativity.

The walkways and the seed cathedral, together with the surrounding landscape park area, provided a story rich in content that brought together the UKs past and present, and demonstrated the leading role it has played in architecture, biodiversity and science and technology.

Canada Pavilion: A rich Canadian experience

Canada, the multi-cultural nation that is home to many Chinese immigrants, offered visitors a rich Canadian experience in its national pavilion at the Shanghai Expo Park.

The splendor of the Canada Pavilion, featuring short films, art work and interactive elements, symbolised the nations economic power and pride.

Australia Pavilion: Incorporating Australian life

Making history by constructing the biggest pavilion ever, Australia, the sixth largest country in the world, strongly showcased its creativity, innovation and achievement in its National Pavilion.

Featuring sculptured curving walls and a red ochre exterior, the Australia Pavilion incorporated many aspects of Australian life.

Interior of the Australia Pavilion (File photo: Li Zhenyu)

Following the showings from the USA, UK and Canada Pavilions, the Australia Pavilion was a masterpiece by another major English-speaking country that could not be ignored.

10 years ago, China realized its century-old dream of hosting the World Expo, the first held in a developing country in the events 169-year history. Although the curtain has long since fallen on the magnificent 184-day carnival, the legacy will live on and inspire us to continue to live the Chinese dream.

Pakistani army chief appreciates Chinas support in curbing COVID-19

(Xinhua)13:40, June 24, 2020

ISLAMABAD, June 23 (Xinhua) — Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday appreciated support from the Chinese government and military to his country to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Chinese embassy.

The Pakistani army chief made the remarks during his meeting with a Chinese military medical expert team in Rawalpindi, hailing the Chinese teams tireless work in Pakistan by sharing their knowhow on controlling and preventing the coronavirus and helping the Pakistani side improve its preventing system.

Bajwa said Pakistan and China are all-weather strategic partners and have the tradition to firmly stand shoulder by shoulder in testing times. Calling China a backbone force in the international community in curbing COVID-19, he said China is extending a helping hand to other countries to fight against the disease.

Zhou Feihu, head of the Chinese military medical team, introduced the teams two-month work in Pakistan and said the Pakistani army is playing an important role in stopping the spread of the infectious disease in the country.

Zhou also hoped that local communities could strictly follow all standard operation procedures made by the government so as to overcome the pandemic and restore local economy in an early date.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing said during the meeting that the Chinese leadership, government and military attach great importance to the China-Pakistan relations and will continuously provide support to Pakistan in terms of pandemic prevention and economic restoration.

The 10-member military expert team arrived in Pakistan on April 24 to join Pakistans efforts to battle the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump says probably sending U.S. troops from Germany to Poland

(Xinhua)09:44, June 25, 2020

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he probably would send some U.S. troops from Germany to Poland during his joint press conference with visiting Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Duda, the first foreign leader to visit the United States since the coronavirus outbreak, said at the conference that there is a possibility of a further increase in American troops in his country.

Such a move might further raise security concerns from Russia, which has repeatedly voiced opposition to NATOs military buildup near its border.

They (Poland) asked us if we would send additional troops … and we will probably be moving them from Germany to Poland, said Trump, stressing that Poland would pay for it.

Trump praised Polands fulfillment of its so-called monetary obligation under NATO while criticizing Germanys delinquency on military spending.

We gotta be reducing our forces in Germany, some will be coming home, and some will be going to other places, but Poland would be one of the other places, he added.

Trump also noted that he looks forward to signing a defense cooperation agreement with Poland. A senior administration official said Tuesday that they were working on the legal details of the agreement, and the U.S. Air Force plans to rotate an MQ-9 drone squadron into Poland and establish an aerial port there once the agreement is signed.

Poland will hold its presidential election on Sunday, and the media widely reported that Duda was counting on the visit to give him a boost on his re-election campaign.

Trump confirmed last week that his country would reduce the U.S. troop level in Germany to 25,000, which raised speculations that some of the troops could be relocated to Poland.

In a Sunday piece on The Wall Street Journal, National Security Adviser Robert OBrien noted that several thousand troops currently stationed in Germany might be reassigned to other countries in Europe.

Washington and Warsaw have been strengthening their security and diplomatic ties. The two countries are on the same page on multiple regional issues such as Iran nuclear issue, alleged Russias threat as well as the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.

Poland, which joined NATO in 1999, has long sought the deployment of a permanent U.S. military force on its territory. The U.S. military has approximately 4,500 rotational troops in Poland.

PLA medical experts honored with Lao army friendship crosses

(Xinhua)15:52, June 28, 2020

VIENTIANE, June 26 (Xinhua) — The Lao Ministry of Defence has awarded Lao Peoples Army friendship crosses to members of the Chinese army medical expert team which has been assisting Laos in battling the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two months.

Ti Xinyu, leader of the Peoples Libration Army (PLA) medical expert team, said at the cross-conferring ceremony on Wednesday that in the past two months, his team has fully shared Chinas anti-epidemic experiences with the Lao side, carried out cooperation with the Lao army over virus testing and confirmation, environmental disinfection and infection control, epidemiological investigation and personnel protection, and diagnosis and treatment training.

The joint efforts have comprehensively improved the epidemic prevention and control capabilities of the Lao army, and contributed to consolidating and developing the friendly relations between the two armies and to building a community with a shared future between the two countries, said Ti.

Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong congratulated the expert team on its excellence in the assistance mission.

The ambassador said the expert team has properly adapted the Chinese anti-epidemic experience to the actual situation in Laos, participating in Laos anti-pandemic battle from the phase with climbing infections to the phase of COVID-19 free.

The expert team has worked in harsh conditions such as in the heat of over 40 Celsius degrees, demonstrating the PLAs endurance and high morale amid hardships, he said.

Lao Deputy Defense Minister Aesamay Leuangvanxay said his country has received strong support from China in the fight against COVID-19, adding that the Chinese army not only sent an expert team in a timely manner, but also provided Laos with urgently-needed medical supplies.

According to a press release from the Chinese embassy in Laos on Thursday, the Lao officer said at the ceremony that the Chinese experts have overcome many difficulties and fully demonstrated the PLAs deep friendship with the Lao army.

He added that the anti-epidemic forces of the two sides have worked closely together to effectively improve the professional capabilities of the Lao army, making important contribution to the anti-epidemic battle in Laos.

The Lao Ministry of National Defense highly appreciated and sincerely thanked the Chinese national defense ministry for its strong support and believed that this was a vivid practice of jointly building a community with a shared future between Laos and China, said Aesamay.

China to adjust leadership structure for reserve forces

(Xinhua)08:46, June 29, 2020

BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) — Chinas reserve military forces will be brought under the centralized and unified command of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the Central Military Commission starting from July 1, according to a decision issued by the CPC Central Committee.

Currently, the reserve forces are under the dual leadership of military organs and local Party committees.

Noting that reserve forces are an important part of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army, the decision, which was made public on Sunday, said the adjustment in the leadership structure is aimed at upholding the CPCs absolute leadership over the army and building a strong military in the new era.

It calls on relevant military and civilian units to take active and coordinated measures to implement the changes to the leadership structure.
