Commentary Playing “Hong Kong card” gets the U.S. nowhere

By ChangFeng (Peoples Daily Online)15:51, June 28, 2020

On June 25, the U.S. Senate passed the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, attempting to hinder Hong Kong’s legislation on safeguarding national security through imposing sanctions.

The passage of the act is a blatant interference in Chinas internal affairs and a serious violation of international conventions and norms governing international relations, exposing the double standards and hegemonic logic of Washington. The trick will yield no success.

Hong Kong affairs are China’s internal affairs, and no external interference shall be tolerated. The Hong Kong citizens and the central government are in the best position to judge whether the city enjoys a high degree of autonomy, while following the “one country, two systems” principle.

The U.S., signing numerous laws to safeguard its own national security, has been stigmatizing China for plugging its national security loopholes. The sanctions by the U.S. are extremely insolent, unreasonable and shameless, revealing the intentions of some American politicians to hinder China’s development through destroying Hong Kong.

Some American politicians have acted as the masterminds behind the scenes, escalating violence in Hong Kong after turbulence ensued over the proposed anti-extradition bill last June.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, an instigator of Hong Kong riots and Joshua Wong Chi-fung, leader of a Hong Kong political group advocating independence. The National Endowment for Democracy of the U.S. fueled protests in Hong Kong, and the U.S. media distorted their reporting on Hong Kong, creating rumors.

The U.S. claimed in its Country Reports on Terrorism 2019 that no terrorist incidents were reported in Hong Kong that year. However, it called the nationwide racial riots on its own territory terrorism.

From supporting violent protesters in Hong Kong, to shamelessly using its domestic laws to interfere in China’s internal affairs, the U.S. organized and planned its moves.

Calling Hong Kong a “bastion of freedom”, the U.S. has been attempting to replace the political system of the Chinese mainland with the “Hong Kong model”. Their intentions are not based on letting Hong Kong enjoy “self-rule”, stability and prosperity, but to obstruct China’s development by destabilizing Hong Kong.

These despicable acts are doomed to fail. The people of Hong Kong have already seen the true colors of the U.S. for a long time. A Hong Kong organization, the United Front Supporting National Security Legislation, has recently launched an online petition signed by over 1 million people in protest of external interference.

In front of public opinion, people who try to use the “Hong Kong card to suppress Chinese development will never succeed.

The United States has 85,000 citizens, over 1,300 companies, nearly 300 regional headquarters and more than 400 regional offices in Hong Kong. Almost all major U.S. financial companies operate in Hong Kong. The U.S. trade surplus with Hong Kong has accumulated to 297 billion U.S. dollars in the past decade, ranking first among U.S. global trading partners.

U.S. trade and finance are the first to suffer once the country imposes sanctions. At a time when COVID-19 is widespread in the U.S., with the economy shrinking in response, it is unwise to impose sanctions on China, a move which only leads to a lose-lose situation.

Hong Kong’s unique status is given by the Basic Law, and it will not be changed by the U.S. sanctions. The prosperity and stability of Hong Kong comes from the hard work of generations of Hong Kong citizens, as well as the strong support from the central government. The U.S. sanctions cannot affect these “fundamentals”.

Only by plugging the security loopholes with national security legislation, rooting out violence, punishing those clamoring for “Hong Kong independence” and advocating “mutual destruction”, improving the business environment and enhancing investor confidence, can Hong Kong withstand any storm and further consolidate its status as an international financial, trade and shipping center.

China is firmly determined to promote the national security legislation for HKSAR, and upholds law and order in Hong Kong. The U.S. should know that its baton of sanctions will not scare Hong Kong and will not bring China down.

Poland resumes delayed presidential election

(Xinhua)16:42, June 28, 2020

WARSAW, June 28 (Xinhua) — Polling stations have opened on Sunday morning for the first round of the Polish presidential elections, which were expected to take place on May 10 but were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Incumbent Polish President Andrzej Duda from the ruling conservative Law and Justice party seeks re-election for another five-year term after his victory in the elections of 2015.

Polls showed that his main rival is Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, a moderately liberal Christian democrat who entered the race rather late to replace Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska, after the partys original candidate tanked in opinion polls.

There are a total of 11 candidates in the elections, including a Christian conservative celebrity journalist, an agrarian-focused social conservative, a far-right nationalist, a social democrat and several others.

Polls showed that Duda is taking the lead but unlikely to top 50 percent of the votes needed to win the presidency. The winner of the first round will compete with the runner-up in a runoff scheduled on July 12.

Law and Justice, led by party chairman Jaroslaw Kaczynski, wanted the elections to go ahead by postal voting only amid favorable polling, despite strong opposition from the public.

Critics argued that elections during lockdowns favor the incumbent, since other candidates are unable to hold on-the-ground campaigns, and put voters health at risk.

The polls close at 9 p.m. local time (1900 GMT).

Palestine denies media reports on dialogue with U.S.

(Xinhua)08:50, June 29, 2020

RAMALLAH, June 28 (Xinhua) — Palestine on Sunday denied any contacts held with the United States, following Israeli media reports about a Palestinian-U.S. dialogue over U.S. President Donald Trumps Mideast peace plan.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said that Palestines position has not changed concerning the severed ties with both the current U.S. administration and Israeli government.

Abu Rudeineh reiterated the Palestinian leaderships decision against the Israeli annexation, saying that all plans to impose the annexation in one go or in phases are a matter of principle, according to a statement published by Palestines official WAFA news agency.

Any dialogue must be based on UN resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative and the peace plan proposed by President Mahmoud Abbas before the United Nations Security Council and on the basis of the principle of the two-state solution that ends the Israeli occupation and allows the establishment of an independent state of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, said Abu Rudeineh.

Israel must assume its full responsibility as an occupying power if it goes ahead with annexation, he was quoted as saying in the statement.

On Saturday night, Israels Public Radio reported that Abbas declined a phone call by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the anticipated annexation plan, and that U.S. officials met secretly with Palestinian officials in an attempt to organize a channel of dialogue between the Palestinian leadership and the White House.

However, no breakthrough was reported.

The Israeli government is planning to annex more than 30 percent of the West Bank, including the Jordan Valley. It also plans to impose sovereignty on several Israeli settlements in the territory.

Tension between the two sides has mounted after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his annexation plan will be implemented on July 1.

U.S. senior health official says window is closing to curb coronavirus surge

(Xinhua)08:50, June 29, 2020

WASHINGTON, June 28 (Xinhua) — U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar said on Sunday the window is closing for the country to curb the surge of coronavirus cases.

In an interview with NBC News, Azar encouraged all Americans to follow the governments guidelines about social distancing and mask wearing.

Azar said that in many southern states where the virus is spiking — including Florida and Texas — the majority of the cases are people under 35, and a large number of those will be asymptomatic.

Weve got our fatality rates and our hospitalization rates are the lowest theyve been in two months, but this is a very serious situation, he said.

Azar said the administration is working with local authorities and states to understand why the virus is surging in certain areas.

He noted that treatments like steroids and remdesivir are now available for COVID-19, and encouraged people who have had the virus to donate plasma to increase the supply.

More than 2,531,000 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the United States with the fatalities surpassing 125,600 as of Sunday afternoon, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

(Xinhua)09:43, September 17, 2020

SHANGHAI, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — The French impressionist Claude Monets masterpiece Impression Sunrise was unveiled on Wednesday afternoon in Shanghai and will be exhibited to the public starting from Thursday.

Besides the well-known Impression Sunrise, there are altogether 47 French paintings being exhibited in Shanghai, including nine of Monets works collected in the Marmottan-Monet Museum in France.

The exhibition also features an innovative exhibition area to play video clips, introducing the origin and background information of Impression Sunrise.

The sunrise symbolizes new birth and hope, which seems more meaningful than ever since people are facing the COVID-19 pandemic, said Marianne Mathieu, scientific director of the museum.

The idea of exhibiting Impression Sunrise in China started around April when achievements and positive results emerged after epidemic prevention and control measures in China. This was while France was in a tough battle against the epidemic, said Myriam Kryger, cultural attache of the French consulate general in Shanghai, adding that both China and France have overcome many difficulties to hold this exhibition.

The exhibition will last until Jan. 3, 2021.

(Xinhua)09:09, September 18, 2020

CHICAGO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — Three Chinese films will be featured during the China Week scheduled from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 at the ongoing Asian Pop Up Cinema Film Festival in Chicago, with a special presentation at a drive-in theater.

The three films are Best Director by Zhang Xian, All About ING by Huang Zi and A Touch of Spring by He Xiaodan.

The film portrays the daily life of a family in a restrained tone and builds a story from the different perspectives of the family members.

Looking for a place where she can truly belong, the protagonist visits her grandfather at her birthplace in south China. The support and inspiration provided by her family and an old lover help her break the impasse in her life.

Homecoming is a popular setup used by many filmmakers. The three protagonists in the films selected for our China Week program are all back home visiting. Its fascinating to see how different each story eventually unfolds, said Sophia Wong Boccio, executive director and founder of the film festival.

In addition to the three Chinese films, there will be a special Chinese film presentation, a Movie-with-Mooncakes night, in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival at the Davis Theater Drive-in in Lincoln Yard on Oct. 1. The program is sponsored by the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago.

Archeologists unearth ancient bronze pot containing alcohol from Han dynasty

(Peoples Daily Online)17:39, September 18, 2020

After testing, Chinese researchers have confirmed that the 3,000 ml of unknown liquid found in a bronze pot unearthed in central China鈥檚 Henan province is alcohol dating to the early Western Han dynasty (206 B.C. – A.D. 24).

In a tomb in the city of Sanmenxia, archaeologists discovered the pot with a curved neck in the shape of a swan this May.

Researchers from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) also found that the alcohol was similar to the medicinal liquor recorded in an ancient medical book discovered in the Mawangdui Tombs of the Han Dynasty in Changsha, central China鈥檚 Hunan province.

Testing will continue, including a nitrogen isotopic analysis, to obtain more information on raw materials, production processes and functions of the ancient alcohol, according to Yang Yimin, a professor with the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology University under the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

鈥淎 bronze pot of this kind is rarely seen. The test report from the sample indicates that the pot was used to hold alcohol,鈥?said Zheng Lichao, head of Sanmenxia鈥檚 Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.

From the tomb, a bronze mirror, a bronze basin and swords made of iron and jade were also unearthed by archaeologists.

China’s film and TV industry gets new lease of life after integrating with Internet

(Peoples Daily Online)09:41, September 07, 2020

China’s film and TV industry, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, has received a new lease of life after being integrated with the Internet industry.

Experts point out that as epidemic prevention and control becomes the norm and cinemas gradually resume business, Internet giants have become more integrated with the film and TV industry. The pattern of “Internet + Film TV” will further promote the development and progress of each link in the film and TV chain industry.

Data shows that consumption of online videos has grown rapidly in the first quarter of this year. In February alone, the average netizen watched online videos nearly 80 times per month on a single device, an increase of 23.2 times over the same period in 2019. The average daily usage time exceeded 2 hours, with a year-on-year increase of 21.2 minutes.

Since March, the frequency of online video usage has continued to increase. In addition, 415 online movies were released in the first quarter of this year, up 22 percent year on year. Several theatrical films are also making their premier on online platforms.

Insiders pointed out that Internet enterprises generally have abundant funds at their disposal, while their broadcast platforms are not restricted by the traditional scale of channels and are less affected by external factors. When Internet enterprises extend their business into the film TV industry, to some degree, they can carry out expansion at a low cost and increase customer loyalty.

Since this year, a number of short video platforms have been accelerating the expansion of their businesses into the long video field. During the Spring Festival, New Year movies premiered online on platforms such as Douyin and Toutiao.

Furthermore, in March, a company affiliated to Douyin was established, with one of its main business operations being film and TV production and distribution.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — Music is needed now more than ever, for it is a means of consolation for people enduring the plight caused by the coronavirus pandemic, world-renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang said Tuesday.

During a virtual dialogue with North America-based reporters to promote his newly released album featuring great German composer Johann Sebastian Bachs Goldberg Variations, Lang, 38, said that music is very important right now in that people need mental support to overcome the hardship they are suffering due to the public health crisis.

It would probably be better (that I perform the piece) when the recitals resume, but I think for those who are struggling right now, the need for mental support is greater than at any time, the virtuoso said when answering a question from Xinhua.

Be it Bachs work or Chinese pieces, I think music can play a more effective role in connecting peoples hearts during these difficult times, Lang said, noting that music transcends national borders, and that hes been making short videos these days to cheer up fans and friends from different parts of the world.

Released on Sept. 4, Langs new album is in cooperation with Deutsche Grammophon and contains two versions of the Goldberg Variations, one recorded in studio and the other a live performance in St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, where Bach was laid to rest.

Lang said that the two versions have their own uniqueness musically, and that to play one of Bachs most famous masterpieces alongside the composers burial site was an experience so special that he couldnt hold back tears when playing.

While lamenting the fact that the coronavirus pandemic has upended all of his performing tours worldwide for 2020, Lang nevertheless wished audience around the world good health through the year.

The Goldberg Variations is a musical composition for harpsichord by Bach that consists of an aria and a set of 30 variations. Named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, the work was first published in 1741 and was considered one of the most important examples of the variation form.
