1 killed, 3 wounded in explosion in northern Iraq

(Xinhua)16:30, September 01, 2020

BAGHDAD, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — At least a woman was killed and three security members were wounded on Tuesday in a car bomb explosion in Iraqs northern city of Kirkuk, the Iraqi military said.

The explosion took place at a security checkpoint on the main road in the south of Kirkuk, some 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement.

The blast resulted in the killing of a woman and the wounding of three security members, the JOC said, citing initial reports about the incident.

The security situation in Iraq was dramatically improved after the Iraqi security forces fully defeated the extremist Islamic State (IS) militants across the country late in 2017, but sporadic attacks occurred in the war-ravaged country.

A total of 41 Chinese cities will have urban rail transit systems in operation by the end of this year, according to the China Association of Metros, Economic Daily reported on August 7.

China鈥檚 urban mass transit has undergone fast and steady development in under 30 years, as opposed to the transit systems in developed countries which have played out over the last 150 years, said Zhou Xiaoqin, executive vice president of the association, in a recent forum on urban mass transit held in Beijing.

By June 30, 197 lines existed in 37 cities, with an operation length totaling 6,126.82 km. This year, China will add another 1,070 km to its national urban rail lines, and the total length is expected to reach 6,800 km by the end of the year, Zhou said.

Upon completion, China will realize the goal of 6,000 km as outlined in the 13th Five-Year Plan ahead of schedule, he added.

鈥淐hina鈥檚 urban mass transit has moved from high-speed growth to high-quality development,鈥?said Zhou. He expects that mass transit systems will play a more important role in satisfying travel demands, improving the layout of cities, easing traffic congestion and promoting the economic and social development in the years to come.

China built its first urban rail line in Beijing in 1969. Over the past five decades, the urban rail transit industry has matured, with 16 cities in China establishing urban rail networks, according to the association.

In 2018, the urban rail transit system carried 21.07 billion passengers. Each year, about 400 to 500 billion yuan is invested in the industry, and 800 km is built and put into operation, the executive vice president introduced.

Speaking of the technological progress, Song Minhua, secretary-general of the association, said that a standard system on urban rail construction and operation management has emerged in China.

Furthermore, China has developed the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signal system independently, only after Germany, France, and Canada.

Zhou mentioned that metros in the UK only cover about 400 km, far less than Beijing subways. However, European countries, including the UK, have been internationally recognized regarding the application of standards.

To realize high-quality development, China needs to enhance self-dependent innovations, and develop smart systems with digital and intelligent technologies, Zhou said.

3,500 suspects captured in Chinas asset unfreezing fraud crackdown

(Xinhua)15:36, August 08, 2019

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) — A total of 3,589 suspects have been captured and 284 fraud criminal groups busted so far this year in Chinas crackdown on scams of unfreezing national fortune left long ago by Chinese, according to a Ministry of Public Security press conference on Thursday.

A total of 623 million yuan (88.95 million U.S. dollars) involved in the fraud cases has been frozen by authorities.

In typical asset unfreezing scams, criminals fabricate stories of huge fortunes left by Chinese from centuries or decades ago and trick people into contributing initial capital or membership fees to unfreeze the legacies for so-called poverty alleviation, charity or investment programs.

The fraud is often conducted via social media and online payment platforms.

Chinese games develop fast in overseas market

Chinese gaming companies have expanded their business and brought a large number of high-quality products to the international market in recent years, Economic Information Daily reported on August 6.

The actual sales revenue of Chinas self-developed games in the overseas market totaled $5.57 billion from January to June this year, revealed a recent report on Chinas game industry released by the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association.

Overseas revenue saw a year-on-year increase of 20.2 percent, higher than the growth rate of sales in the domestic market, according to the report.

Of all games, role-playing games, strategy games and competitive multiplayer games were most popular among foreign players, accounting for 83 percent of total overseas revenue, said the report.

China has dramatically improved its research and development capabilities in recent years, especially when it comes to mobile games. This has created a rise in the overseas market share and influence of Chinas self-developed games, said Sun Shoushan, director of the association, at the 2019 China Digital Entertainment Expo and Conference (ChinaJoy) held in Shanghai.

Last year, Chinas overseas gaming market hit $9.59 billion, making the country one the largest games exporters in the world, Sun said.

Statistics indicate that the US, Japan, South Korea and Europe remain the major target markets of Chinas self-developed games. Meanwhile, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Latin America are of high market potential.

More efforts should be made to introduce self-developed games with Chinese style to the global market, said Guo Yiqiang, Director of the Publication Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Domestic gaming companies need to develop high-quality products based on the demands of foreign consumers and build a competitive edge in the global market, Guo noted.

China can ensure its own food security

China has the ability to fully control its food supply as the fundamentals of the country鈥檚 food production have maintained a healthy trend toward stable growth, said Han Changfu, Chinese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

The ability derives from the country鈥檚 implementation of a national food security strategy based on domestic supply, moderate imports, maintenance of agricultural productivity and innovation in science and technology.

鈥淭he bowls of the Chinese, in any situation, must rest soundly in our own hands. Our bowls should be filled mainly with Chinese grain.鈥?These remarks from Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the country鈥檚 confidence in its food security.

The government鈥檚 emphasis on agriculture and supporting policies have encouraged grain production.

China鈥檚 total grain output reached 658 billion kilograms in 2018, managing to feed around 20 percent of the world鈥檚 population with less than 9 percent of the world鈥檚 arable land, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The country strictly adheres to the red line of no less than 1.8 billion mu (120 million hectares) of arable land, implements unique systems to protect about 1.55 billion mu of permanent basic cropland, and plans to build at least 80 million mu of high-standard farmland by 2020, underpinning the sufficient supply of major agricultural products.

The overall level of mechanization in plowing, sowing, and harvesting is now at 68 percent, and advances in agricultural science and technology contributed to 58.3 percent of agricultural production.

In addition, China continuously optimizes its agricultural structure, deepens supply-side reform, and pursues green development in agriculture, ensuring food production sustainability.

By guaranteeing food security, China can continue to be fully confident in response to the complicated international situation.

The robots are loaded with sensors and can move autonomously in all directions. They can assist traffic police to take photos of vehicles violating parking rules, direct traffic and verify drivers licenses.

Ma Zhanshan, chief of Handan municipal public security bureau, said the bureau aims to use the robots around the clock in important public locations such as train stations and airports to reduce the work intensity of local traffic police.

Chinas central bank skips reverse repos

(Xinhua)11:22, August 04, 2020

The Peoples Bank of China (PBOC), the countrys central bank, skipped open market operations via reverse repos Tuesday.

The banking system reports reasonable and sufficient liquidity at present, the PBOC said in an online statement.

A total of 80 billion yuan (about 11.46 billion U.S. dollars) of reverse repos matured Tuesday.

A reverse repo is a process in which the central bank purchases securities from commercial banks through bidding, with an agreement to sell them back in the future.

China will pursue a prudent monetary policy in a more flexible and appropriate way, according to this years government work report.
