Most Chinese have strong epidemic prevention awareness survey

(Xinhua)09:30, August 03, 2020

Nearly 90 percent of respondents in a recent survey by China Youth Daily believe they have strong awareness of epidemic prevention under regular control measures.

Of the 2,005 people surveyed, 90.3 percent said they are accustomed to the situation brought about by the current regular epidemic control.

Yang Xiaojun, who works at a bank in Yinchuan, capital of northwest Chinas Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, has a strong sense of personal protection.

The banks business premises and equipment would be disinfected every day before operation begins, while every staff member would take their body temperature before starting work, she said.

Nearly 84 percent of the respondents washed hands regularly and more than 73 percent wore masks when stepping out.

Sixty-four percent of the respondents said they would maintain a healthier lifestyle after resuming work. More than 67 percent suggested a regular life and adequate sleep, while nearly 65 percent stressed good hygiene.

Xiang Jianyu, who lives in Beijing, said the habit of using serving chopsticks should be maintained and become part of social etiquette recognized by all after the epidemic is over.

Of those surveyed, 57.2 percent are from second- and third-tier cities and 33.9 percent live in first-tier ones.

With its own backyard a mess, Washington should quit meddling in the South China Sea

By JiangLi (Xinhua)16:21, July 14, 2020

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday that the United States rejected Chinas territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea, the latest provocative act in his notorious campaign to undermine China.

Pompeos statement not only disregards the facts related to the South China Sea, but also gravely violates Chinas sovereignty and interferes with its internal affairs. The Chinese embassy in the United States slammed his remarks as completely unjustified, and said the Chinese side is firmly opposed to it.

Washington is not a relevant party regarding territorial concerns in the South China Sea, yet it frequently — and unwisely — chooses to flex its military muscle and stir up tensions in the region. The reason? To contain China and pursue its own hegemonic ambitions in the Asia-Pacific.

Dont be fooled. As the world continues to fight COVID-19 and with the United States itself deeply mired in the pandemic, sober minds worldwide can see right through the current U.S. administrations purely political scheme to divert domestic attention away from its poor handling of the outbreak, not to mention the countrys systemic human rights abuses against its African American population.

Islands in the South China Sea have been part of Chinas inherent territory since ancient times, and China has ample historical proof to underpin its sovereignty and legitimate maritime rights there. No one can deny such overwhelming evidence.

Besides, China has long worked with all related parties in the South China Sea to maintain peace and stability in the region. Within the framework of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations continue to make visible progress in ensuring peace in the region.

The golden principle of preserving stability in the South China Sea requires all parties to solve their differences through dialogue and respect each others core interests. Yet by sending aircraft carriers to the region and launching ill-founded accusations against Beijing, Washington is attempting to undermine the peace.

Washington hardliners should not underestimate Chinas determination to safeguard its sovereign rights. History has shown that every time Washington tries to make waves in the region, China steadfastly responds, as it did with the South China Sea tribunal debacle in 2016.

As of Monday, the United States has reported more than 3.36 million COVID-19 cases with over 135,000 deaths, according to the latest Johns Hopkins University tally. Both figures are far higher than those of any other country or region.

Washingtons energy would best be spent on containing the pandemic raging in its own backyard instead of interfering in Chinas domestic concerns.

China braces for more floods, extremely heavy downpours

(Xinhua)10:12, July 14, 2020

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) — China is stepping up disaster relief efforts as the country continues to see more floods and unusually heavy downpours this summer, officials said Monday.

Floods that triggered alerts have been observed in 433 rivers nationwide since June. Of these rivers, 33 beat previous water level records, Ye Jianchun, vice minister of Water Resources, told a press conference.

The number of rivers in spate has seen a dramatic rise from 271 that saw floods above warning levels by the end of June.

Zheng Guoguang, vice minister of Emergency Management, attributed the severe flooding to the extra rainfall in the season mostly in the southern parts of the country.

The average rainfall in regions along the Yangtze River this year has been the highest since 1961, 51 percent more than the amount in other years, according to Zheng.

Due to the disastrous flooding, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters raised the emergency response to Level II Sunday, following its last upgrade from Level IV to Level III Tuesday, with efforts at flood control, rescue and disaster relief.

As of 7 a.m. Monday, floods in 27 provincial regions had affected a population of 38.73 million, leaving 141 people dead or missing, and more than 2.24 million emergency relocations. Around 29,000 homes were destroyed, and direct economic losses reached 86.16 billion yuan (about 12.31 billion U.S. dollars).

Zheng noted that as Chinas capability in flood control and disaster relief improves, despite the severity of the flooding, the loss of lives and property has significantly decreased compared to the same period in the past five years.

Ye warned that while waters levels are likely to remain high in the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake, as the rain belt is expected to move northward, areas along the Yellow River and the Haihe River should brace for possible floods.

Zheng said apart from further efforts at flood defense in the south, measures should be taken to guard against downpour-triggered disasters such as heavy floods and landslides, as well as possible typhoons, and high tides that could worsen the damage.

China urges community-level hospitals to improve services for elderly people

(Xinhua)10:13, July 14, 2020

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) — Chinas community-level medical institutions were asked to improve inpatient wards and provide more beds for the elderly, according to a circular released by the National Health Commission Monday.

Hospital beds in community-level medical institutions should be mainly used for elderly patients, rehabilitation, nursing care and palliative care, the circular said.

By the end of 2018, China had about 250 million citizens aged 60 and above, accounting for 17.9 percent of the total population. Nearly 180 million elderly people in the country have chronic diseases.

Wang Jianjun, director of the China National Committee on Ageing, had earlier stressed that communities are a primary part of old-age care, noting that communities will enjoy more support in terms of policies and finance.

The circular laid out other measures to promote the development of community-level medical institutions, including enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of common diseases.

The medical institutions were encouraged to set up targeted departments, including psychological clinics, in accordance with local conditions.

The circular also stressed the detection and reporting of infectious diseases.

China urges U.S. to commit to no-first-use nuclear weapons policy

(Xinhua)09:51, January 06, 2021

BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — A foreign ministry spokesperson on Tuesday called on the United States to follow China in committing to a policy of no-first-use of nuclear weapons, and to cut its nuclear weapons drastically on the basis of extending the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

Among the five nuclear powers, China is the only country pursuing the policy of no-first-use of nuclear weapons, and this policy will not be changed. We hope the U.S. can make the same commitment as China does as soon as possible, spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing.

Can the U.S. make this commitment publicly? she continued.

Huas comments came after the U.S. Department of State released an article titled Chinas Nuclear Madness, accusing China of allowing no transparency in its growing nuclear arsenal.

Hua said lie diplomacy of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the U.S. State Department has had a tremendous and terrible influence on the credibility and image of the United States.

It is widely known that the U.S. has the largest and most advanced nuclear arsenal, she said. But the Trump administration has seriously undermined global strategic security and stability by evading its special responsibility in nuclear disarmament, wantonly pulling out of treaties and organizations, spending trillions of dollars upgrading its nuclear arsenal, and lowering the threshold of using nuclear weapons.

The international community has a fair conclusion on who is pursuing nuclear madness, Hua said, urging the U.S. side to stop smearing China and acting like a thief crying stop thief.

China adheres to a national defense policy that is defensive in nature, and always keeps its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level required for its national security, the spokesperson said.

China also maintains the policy of no-first-use of nuclear weapons at any time and under any circumstances, and unconditionally commits itself to not using or threatening to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states or nuclear-weapon-free zones, said Hua.

We urge the U.S. side to respond positively to Russias call and agree to extend the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty as soon as possible, and further reduce its nuclear weapons drastically on this basis, Hua said.

Israeli missile attack targets military sites south of Syrian capital report

(Xinhua)09:26, January 07, 2021

DAMASCUS, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) — The Syrian air defenses responded to an Israeli missile attack on south of the capital Damascus on Wednesday night, state news agency SANA reported.

The sounds of Syrian anti-air weapons were heard in Damascus, the report said.

A military source was cited by SANA as saying that the Israeli attack was carried out from over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and targeted some military sites in south of Damascus.

It added that the Syrian air defenses intercepted most of the Israeli missiles.

The Israeli attack is the latest to target military sites in Syria.

Israeli missiles hit a Syrian military base in the Zabadani suburb in west of Damascus on Dec. 30, 2020, killing one Syrian soldier and wounding three others.

Earlier this month, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Israel had carried out a total of 39 attacks on Syrian military sites in 2020, killing 217 Syrian soldiers and pro-Iran fighters.

Israel has repeatedly said it will not tolerate any military activity of the Iranian-backed militias in Syria.

The resort has seen an increase of 17 to 20 percent in the number of tourists every year starting in 2016 when Beijing began to popularize ski and ice sports, according to Liu Yingkai, general manager of the resort.

This winter, the resort set a 1,500-people limit on the number of tourists allowed to enter per day. In the first two weeks following the opening of the resort in November 2020, by Thursday tickets had already sold out for Saturday. In addition, tickets for ski trails for training purposes were fully booked 10 days after they were released, Liu said.

There has been a significant increase in the sale of ice and snow equipment, and half of the ski enthusiasts would like to use their own equipment, according to Liu. The sales volume of ski equipment, priced between several hundred to several thousand yuan, at a shop in Vanke Shijinglong Ski Resort, doubled, he introduced.

A ski equipment market in Ciqikou of Beijing is enjoying prosperous business thanks to the popularity of ice and snow sports. Home to more than 30 stores, the market sells snowboards, snowshoes, ski wear, protective clothing, snow goggles and backpacks.

According to a shop owner from the market, the shop’s total sales of ice and snow equipment and its chain shops surpassed 20 million yuan in October 2020, with the figure doubling in November, and continuing to rise in January 2021.

Some shopping centers in Beijing have built indoor skating rinks to attract ski enthusiasts. In addition, more and more international ice and snow equipment brands have opened stores in Beijing, including KJUS ski and golf apparel from Switzerland and Mackage from Canada.
