Chinas ceramics hub rises above trade woes

(Xinhua)15:32, December 30, 2020

FUZHOU, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) — From regular COVID-19 updates to client visits, Zheng Pengfeis social media posts offer a glimpse into how his ceramics business has fared through much of the past year.

Many orders were canceled in March and April due to the epidemic, casting a shadow on the business of Shunmei Group, a leading ceramics exporter in Dehua County of east Chinas Fujian Province, said Zheng, the groups general manager.

To counter the impact, Zheng and his team doubled their efforts to maintain close contact with foreign clients through email and WeChat, and to make sure every shipment was delivered as scheduled.

As the epidemic eased in China, Shunmeis exports began to recover in May. Orders have continued to come in over recent months, said Zheng. Christmas-related products have sold particularly well.

Thanks to robust exports of ceramic home accessories and seasonal gifts, which account for around 80 percent of Shunmeis business, the companys exports this year are expected to outperform those of last year despite the impact of the epidemic.

Dehua, a ceramics manufacturing powerhouse in China, exports over 60 percent of its ceramic products to over 190 countries and regions worldwide. It was dubbed the World Ceramics Capital by the World Crafts Council in 2015.

From 1985 to 2019, the number of ceramics-making companies in Dehua ballooned from a few dozen to over 3,000. Roughly a third of the countys population works in the industry.

In 2020, Dehua has risen above the trade woes caused by COVID-19, with exports hitting 2.49 billion yuan (about 380 million U.S. dollars) in the first 10 months, up 7.8 percent year on year. It is estimated that Dehuas ceramics industry will be worth 40 billion yuan by the end of this year.

Amid the pandemic, many entrepreneurs in Dehua are exploring new market opportunities. Wen Keren, a pioneer who has been helping Dehua build its export-oriented ceramics industry since the 1980s, is among such entrepreneurs.

As global demand for disposable latex gloves took off amid the pandemic, Wens company quickly switched to producing ceramic glove formers, a product that he found had huge market potential.

Some large glove manufacturers have as many as 100 production lines, with each needing about 30,000 glove formers, Wen estimated.

The glove formers are made of a high-performance material that is tougher and more durable than regular ceramic. It remains a budding industry in China as until recently, the country relied on imports of the product, said Wen.

Were working around the clock to complete orders, said Wen, adding that orders from home and abroad had piled up until June. The first shipment is expected to be exported before the Spring Festival in February.

Dehua boasts time-honored techniques and craftsmanship, as well as hard-working people, he said.

China-EU investment treaty to offer better business environment MOC

(Xinhua)09:14, December 31, 2020

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) — The investment treaty between China and the European Union (EU) will bring more investment opportunities for companies from both sides and provide better business environment by making high-level market access commitments and adopting high-level fair competition rules, Chinas Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Wednesday.

The agreement adopts pre-establishment national treatment plus a negative list regarding market access, an official with MOC said at a press conference after the two sides have completed investment agreement negotiations as scheduled.

For the first time, China promises to introduce negative lists for all industries, including service and non-service sectors, to align with the negative list for foreign investment management system established in accordance with the Foreign Investment Law, said the official when answering questions from the press.

The EU also promises to grant China fairly high-level market access, said the official.

Regarding restrictions on market access that do not discriminate against foreign investment but have a significant impact on the establishment and operation of enterprises, China and the EU will promise not to impose restrictions on the number, output, turnover, senior management, local research and development, export performance and headquarters establishment in most economic fields, the official said.

Foreign exchange transfers, personnel entry and stay related to investment will be allowed, said the official.

Regarding fair competition rules, the two parties will create a law-based business environment and reach a consensus on topics concerning state-owned enterprises, subsidy transparency, technology transfer, standard establishment, administrative law enforcement and financial regulation, which are closely related to the operation of companies, according to the official.

China will suspend regular passenger flights to and from the United Kingdom to prevent the spread of a new variant of novel coronavirus, the countrys civil aviation authority said on Sunday.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China has told domestic and international airlines to suspend flights between China and the UK from Monday to Jan 10 after the UK recently reported a new and more infectious strain of the virus.

The administration said airlines should arrange refunds for passengers affected by the suspension of flights.

On Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin had said China would suspend flights between China and the UK.

Given the exceptional nature of the new virus variant and its potential impact, China made the decision after a full assessment to safeguard peoples health and people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries, Wang said at a regular news briefing in Beijing.

China has taken reference of the practices of other countries, he said, adding that China will closely follow the situation and make adjustments in due course.

Earlier, countries such as Germany, Canada and France suspended flights to and from the UK to prevent the spread of the virus.

London announced a lockdown before Christmas for the same reason.

The airline said in a press release that the route between Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and Nanjing in eastern China, will be operated with Airbus A350 from Sept. 11 to Oct. 18, 2020. The route supports cargo and passenger travel demand between Europe and China.

China to continue fulfilling fiscal obligations to UN spokesperson

(Xinhua)09:31, September 05, 2020

BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) — China on Friday expressed its concern for the possible impact of a huge shortfall in contributed assessments on the United Nations normal work, vowing to continue fulfilling its due fiscal obligations to the UN as a developing country.

In a letter addressed to member states, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the organization is faced with severe financial difficulties, with overdue contributions amounting to 1.52 billion U.S. dollars. He called on member states to pay their assessed contributions on time and in full to support the UN in accomplishing its work this year.

Responding to a query about the remarks, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said China, as the second-largest contributor to the UN, has been fully implementing its fiscal obligations to the organization and paid this years contribution in full, showing its support for the UN through concrete actions.

We will continue to earnestly fulfill the due fiscal obligations to the UN as a developing country, the spokesperson said at a daily press briefing.

China pays high attention to the current financial distress the UN is experiencing, and expresses concerns for the possible impact of the huge shortfall in assessed contributions on the UNs normal operations, said Hua.

Hua pointed out that the United States, as the No.1 country in terms of defaulting on membership fees to the UN, has long been delaying payment, with the amount overdue accounting for more than two thirds of the total, which is the main reason that has led to the UNs financial difficulties.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the UNs founding. Hua said that upholding multilateralism, safeguarding the UNs core role in international affairs, and jointly responding to global challenges through united cooperation conform with the common interests of all parties.

China is ready to work with all countries to actively support the UNs work and jointly advance the UNs bigger role in promoting world peace and development, Hua added.

Ethiopian diplomat commends lifesaving COVID-19 partnership with China

(Xinhua)09:52, September 05, 2020

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) — An Ethiopian diplomat on Friday commended lifesaving anti-COVID-19 partnership with China.

Speaking exclusively to Xinhua, Teshome Toga, Ethiopian Ambassador to China, said China has been a decisive partner to the east African country as it battles the spread of COVID-19.

Ethiopia received robust support from the Chinese government with the provision of medical supplies, the organization of health webinars and direct assistance from Chinese medical experts,.

The two countries have lined up a number of other COVID-19 related activities including sharing Chinese successful anti-COVID-19 experience to help in Ethiopias own anti-COVID-19 fight, Toga told Xinhua.

Ethiopias confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 55,213 after 804 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed as of Friday morning, the countrys Ministry of Health said.

Toga who earlier this year personally witnessed Chinas effective fight against the spread of COVID-19, said the Asian country can become a model to Ethiopias own fight against the disease.

The way the Chinese worked to fight COVID-19 is impressive. The stringent measures imposed by the government of China took by locking down Wuhan, a city of 11 million for several months meant the spread of COVID-19 was contained within Wuhan, Toga told Xinhua.

Toga further said the effective COVID-19 prevention and containment strategy in Wuhan meant other Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai were largely spared from the spread of the virus.

The Chinese government injected a lot of resources and technology with the critical participation of the Chinese public, to lessen the spread of COVID-19 to other cities, said Toga.

The Chinese public were very cooperative at all levels with the policy set by the Chinese government. I think that made a great difference in the fight against the disease Toga told Xinhua.

The Ethiopian ambassador to China, also commended the role of people to people ties in both countries anti-COVID-19 fight.

Ethiopias support to China during the fight against COVID-19 was well received and the general public will tell you Ethiopia is a true friend of China, said Toga.

China in return helped Ethiopia when COVID-19 occurred in Ethiopia, he said.

Toga further disclosed Ethiopia is in talks with the Chinese government on possible partnership in the east African countrys planned post-COVID-19 economic recovery program.
